Hey everyone, thanks for the informative posts. I've just received my W510 and I'm in the process of installing Snow Leopard. I decided to try a dual boot with Windows 7 on a GPT disk (probably not wise for my first go on this machine). Presently, the only way I can boot into Snow Leopard is by using the -s -f boot flags. It's probably a rouge extension. I will post my progress here once I have something to report.

Ok, so at the end of today, I have both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard loaded onto a single GUID drive. I followed nabs' guide; use Empire EFI to boot into SL installation, update to 10.6.3, install new kernel, myhack, reboot. As of now it seems I have fully supported video, but no keyboard/trackpad (usb kb/mouse works). The webcam also works. That's about it.

However, there's something wrong with myhack/chameleon as I still have to use the thumbdrive chameleon bootloader. I tried setting the Snow Leopard partition (disk0s2) to boot as detailed in this guide, but I guess it had no effect. This is the first priority now.

*Update*

Above issues SOLVED. A second pass with the myHack installer fixed the bootloader (I don't know why the first one didn't hold). I got keyboard/trackpad by selecting the ApplePS2 kext in the myHack installer. Well that was quite a day. Off to bed.

I saw no one else answered so I'll clarify - the kernels and the OS version numbers are different. 10.3.1 kernel corresponds to 10.6.3 OS, I believe.

Got ethernet working using this extension for the Intel 82577LM (installed to S/L/E) - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index. ... pic=219114

Also I tested out an external monitor from the VGA port - works perfectly fine (this is running GraphicsEnabler on the Quadro FX card)

Still not working: Audio (tried voodoohda, not sure why it didn't work). Haven't looked at sleep, speedstep, or the USB 3 ports yet.

Any wireless luck? I have a T410 with similar hardware, and if I could get a good SL install on this... would be quite pleased.

I'm stuck on sound - the Conexant 20585. There are appears to be someone who got it working using DSDT, but considering my inability to read his posts (in mandarin) and my relative inexperience with DSDT patching, I will probably let this one go for now.

The W510 has proven to be a very good Hackintosh.

Is anyone else having a hell of a time getting dual boot functioning properly? I have a straight forward MBR with two partitions, but it seems both the Windows dvd diskpart and the Snow Leopard diskutil simply fail at setting the active partition to the HFS one. Thusly, I get a blinking cursor on startup.

Alternatively, diskutil has no problem setting the active partition to the windows one, and I can use easyBCD. But man, I'd really prefer Chameleon.

Better have a pot of coffee with you, it's huge.

Basically, the mods have a site where they keep the modifed BIOS that will replace your installed BIOS.
You need to request access and wait.

I believe that the "trick" is that in the modified BIOS, they remove any type of restriction from being checked.
That is, instead of tying to keep a list of cards that are allowed.

Once flashed, you should not get that 18xx error or whatever.

I have that same Dell card in a Toshiba N200 - it comes up as a "Third party" card - but works great!!
You can even spoof the MAC address with it !! - I wish the Atheros in my X60t could - but I digress.

IBM does not lock out USB cards/stick - would be far too difficult.

The card that are locked out are full and mini Mini PCI-E cards that you use for wireless.

You can swap the card, but will probably need to flash your BIOS to allow use of it.

I have just finished my hackintosh project on w510 by using latest tonymac's iBoot + Multibeast, and iMac11,1 smbios.plist that suppose to enable SpeedStep. Well, I have to say it is not worth it. I have ran xBench few times, and I get less than half score of whatever real MacBook Pro gets (around 75). I don't really know, if there are other configs for w510, but I got i7 720 with 4GB Ram. It is a single boot box. The installation was flawless, but still no support for intel wifi... Has anyone here benchmarked their w510 with xbench? Any scores to compare?

Update: I also realized every cpu utility shows 1.6GHz max speed. I was never able to see this number goes higher. I also ran 'yes' command, and then tried probing the cpu and it was still operating at 1.6Ghz. Seems Turbo feature is not working... Any clues?

Hi All,

I just ordered a W510 with 880 graphics that I will be attempting to OSX86. I have some experience with this, having done MSI U123 and VMWare 7 OSX86 installations. I've previously bought a retail OSX Snow Leo disk set, and I also have a Mac Mini that I use as a home theater PC and for Xcode. I travel a lot for work, so I use the hackintosh stuff when I am on the road for XCode development. VMWare works but is awful slow and the U123 screen is too small for Xcode. The W510 dual boot would give me the best of all worlds.

This install looks to be a bit more challenging than the others. I will follow through the previous posts here and see how it goes. Pre-install questions:

1. I want to dual boot Win7 and OSX. I bought a 2nd drive for the UltraBay to hopefully make things cleaner/easier. I have a USB DVD for the OS X install. Any tips/suggestions on how to best set up the dual boot? I'm assuming that I'll use MBR on the Windows drive and GUID on the Mac OS Drive?

2. From what I have read here, do I need a BIOS patch to get a different wireless card to work?

I will probably have a few questions as I go through it, but I intend to keep track of everything I do and post my notes here to help others.

2.bios file should be bios.rom
3.this bios is not based on current most updated Lenovo version.
4.after flash and reboot, if you insert your wifi card ,it should get rid of 1820 message.

I also have a question about w510's video. Now I used nvenabler.kext to enable all video function, 1600*900, CI/QE, resolution changed. But when I connect to projector, I can't make it dual display. When projector get displayed, w510's lcd will be blank.

You've done the right thing by getting two harddrives. I wish I had done this, but the multitude of netbook guides that simply have you do a GUID/MBR hybrid blinded me to the truth! Such a setup is unstable at best. Two HD's is the way to go - just give the OSX one boot priority and you should be good with a chameleon bootloader.

For the installation, I had success booting from an Empire EFI cd to the Snow Leopard installation dvd. Once installed, I had to continue using the Empire EFI cd with the boot flags -v -s -x -f or I would get a kernel panic. Once I upgraded to 10.6.3 and upgraded the mach_kernel (instructions on the 3rd page of the thread) I installed MyHack with the default settings + the PS2 kext and everything was cool.

I'm kind of afraid of updating my bios ,I just got my w510 back from Lenovo ,I bricked my w510 one month ago. I had better buy a usb wifi card instead ,I'm scared, which card should I buy.?

Did you get alternative buttons (red left & right) to work? Also, it seems power management is not working properly for me. When I execute the shutdown it doesn't turn of the motherboard, and dvd is spinning... Do you have same symptoms?

Unfortunately, I had no hdmi cable to test external display. It seems it is not a standard hdmi, but something that ibm came up with. I will get one off ebay, and test it then...
Did you get your SD card reader to work? IF yes, what kext have you used?
