Hello,
I have found all your posts incredibly helpful up to this point.
I have Lion 10.7.2 running almost flawlessly on my boyfriend's X61, however he encounters occasional kernel panics and from what we can tell it only happens when he is using a windows file e.g. a word document or excel file.
Does anyone know how I could possibly correct this?
If you need an more info let me know.
Thanks so much.

Do you mean - when you use Office 2011(or 2008) for MAC to open a word or excel file, then the OS (Lion 10.7.2) crashes?
I have 2 partitions for dual boot - one is Windows 7 Professional, The other is for Lion 10.7.3
On Windows 7 partition, I have MS Office 2010 installed, On MAC partition, I have MS Office 2011 installed, I want to know your steps to repeat the problem on my machine.

If I were you, i'd try to update office to the latest version (it seems to be office related) and maybe try and open those files in different programs (maybe Preview, Pages, Libreoffice (free download at
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ ... ) if it opens without problems, then it's office related and maybe you should ask directly to your program's support service. If it still crashes, it might be filesystem related (Do you have those files in your windows partition? -> then try and copy them to other media first, if it works after that, try to update/change the way you access that filesystem).
Also, try to see what is your system telling/logging, you can do it through the terminal or Console.app, both of them in /Applications/Utilities.
I see that there were some problems with your filesystem (probably your system crashed on prior reboots), I can't tell you exactly what is going on from your screenshot, (I am no pro anyways) but maybe, if you get to boot your system from a usb, and reinstall at least the /S/L/E files and DSDT.aml, and if possible, reinstall the system. That way you can get a "cleaner" output, that might expose in a clearer way what is wrong in your system.
If you boot from a usb, you might also open the Terminal.app from the installation system's "utilities" menu, where you can access to your system logs to get a full log output (logs are in /var/log/kernel.log and /var/log/system.log, in your booted installation system you'll find them in /Volumes/lion OS root/var/log/kernel.log and /Volumes/lion OS root/var/log/system.log). You can use any typical console command to get the output of those files, like
cat,
more,
tail.. Or you could copy them to the installation media and open them in another system/installation (I suppose you have access to one, as you are posting in this forum

)

Hi
As far as I know it is just MS Office as numbers works fine.
We don't have it set to duel boot, he just has two different HDDs he switches in and out when he wants to use windows.
Will get him to leave the logger open next time he's trying to do something and let you know.

Lion can read NTFS partition(Windows 7 hard drive) directly, you do not need to use "Tuxera NTFS" driver, Uninstall that software, and try it again.

As already said, avoid to use 3rd party drivers as long as possible (crashes aren't that unusual when those drivers/applications are not well polished). I'd sugest you to remove the macfuse ntfs driver, as
jzhang18 said. If it's fundamental for you to have write access to a NTFS drive, try other solutions/applications, like paragon's one.
If you want to have a drive readable and writable by many systems, use ExFAT (it might not be perfect, as it doesn't have any journaling, for instance). Usable on Windows since XP sp2 and vista sp1, Lion by default and linux with a fuse driver.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

My desktop (based on GA-P55-USB3/i5 750/ATI HD 6850) has 4 hard drives, 2 for Windows, 2 for MAC OSX (Lion, Snow Leopard)
After a clean installation of Lion, I can read Windows hard drives without any problem.
Snow Leopard has internal ability to write Windows Partition (by adding a record in /etc/fstab file)
But Apple seems to remove this feature from Lion. So Lion can only read NTFS partition, but need extra driver for writing facility such as "Tuxera NTFS" driver which is open source code, or commercial driver such as "NTFS for MAC OSX" from PARAGON Software Group Ltd.
GA-P55-USB3 is a modern PC-motherboard that has better compatiblity with Apple Machine. I can Install MAC OSX on it with less efforts to achieve the most stability.

This is the error from Console, I don't really understand what the problem is so maybe you can shed some light on it.
Could you create a new user on MAC OSX and test the issue with the new user. if problem still exists.
Try to turn off indexing of spotlight from terminal windows
sudo mdutil -i off
if all above steps still can not pinpoint the problem, I would prefer you to reinstall Lion via tonymacx86's UniBeast, it is an easy and clean way to install Lion on hacintosh.

If it is just a rare case , after you reinstall Lion, it is very less chance to have the problem again.

I really don't recommend you using any NTFS writing software on Mac. Either it's Hackintosh or original Mac - you will have problems with badly written data. As I know there's no 100% stable NTFS-writing software for Mac. Instead I recommend you formatting all your drives to Mac OS X and accessing them on Windows using MacDrive. Mac OS X file system is way more reliable than NTFS from my own experience.

I have 500GB(7200rpm) laptop hard drive, setup a daul-boot system, Windows 7(300GB)/Lion10.7.3(200GB). On Windows 7 side, I have "HFS for Windows" installed, On Lion side, I have "NTFS for MAC OSX" installed.
Both side has AntiVirus, MS Office Suite installed. So I can scan Virus from the other side, exchange office documents from either side. Copy back-forward big GBs file to the partition from the other side. I did not encounter any crashes.
Only thing I have is when I try to install Window Software which resides on MAC partition, I got warning "cannot open some missing files". I must copy the setup files to Windows Partition.

HI,
I found this UPEK driver that works on my t61p.
Maybe it will work also on x61!
http://support.authentec.com/Downloads/ ... ntryId=121
I take this opportunity to ask you if multitouch works too (with fingers lets say...) as I maybe be interested in changing laptop since i'm moving more and carrying my laptop with me quite always...
Thanks,
Alex

Hello, Alex!
Thanks for the link

It should work on X61, but I never tried it - I don't like its current design
As about multitouch - pen works with Tabletmagic, but for finger you need a driver that costs about $200 currently. It's too much, so I don't even remember a link

If I remember correctly, OS X supports NTFS reading natively since the days of Mac OS 10.3 Panther in October 2003. So couldn't you try to remove the Paragon driver as well to see whether the kernel panics still occur without it?

I could, and yes it does read NTFS but you cannot write to an NTFS drive natively on Lion. This is a particularly annoying problem because FAT is no good because of transfer size limit, mac format no good because it used with a PC also and for some reason the other thinkpad does not like to play with macdrive.

Here's the IOPCMCIAFamily.kext. It worked on 10.6.X but I never tried it on 10.7

I got finally and absolutely Apple Magic Mouse (Bluetooth) to work with integrated Bluetooth (Broadcom 2045B) in X61! It even connects automatically after sleep
Please check the new section
Getting Bluetooth to work with Apple Magic Mouse in my manual in the first post.

After unsuccessful installation of 10.7.3. I restored from backup my old 10.7.2. But now I have problems with battery indicator. It does show when charging, but when unplugged, there is no info about how much time or % left, just "not charging". I tried to reinstall ACPI, voodoo battery kexts, but no results so far. Any thoughts?

For a correct work of VoodooBattery you need an AppleACPIPlatform.kext from 10.6.7 (included in the package in my first post). Did you replace it back after 10.7.3? And did you refresh kext caches?

Yes, I'v done that. there actually were no 10.7.3, I could not boot OS after combo update, so I recovered back to 10.7.2 from time machine backup. unfortunately battery indicator and tablet features does not work any more. It worked well before...

Sorry to ask but did you really check your /System/Library/Extensions folder after restoring from backup?
TimeMachine doesn't restore kexts to that folder. It doesn't replace them. It just adds new ones that didn't exist before restore.

I restored back all your files from the first post. Checked everything, but something is still wrong...

This is an awesome thread...Got my old X61 going with 10.7.3 and it is great!
The tutorial on the first page worked perfectly. The only outstanding issue that I have is getting the tablet/stylus to work. I've installed the tablet enabler kext. I can see it loaded in system profiler. Tablet magic is also installed and accessible in system preferences. When I load tabletmagic serial0 is slected and and all seems right but I get no response from the stylus. Is there something that I am missing? Does the serial port need to be set to a specific interrupt in the bios?
Thanks for any help!
