Is it just me, or does that seriously look like a tank of an ultraportable? Just look at the hinges.
If those are the same alloys as our thinkpads and the screen is about as sturdy as some of the Z6X Series Thinkpads I have tried, then I am sure it is quite durable. The only problem is that it doesn't have a trackpoint; yet for the price, it looks like a very good deal for an ultraportable. Especially one with a DVD recorder. I noticed that the review was pretty positive about the laptop overall.
Now I actually want to get my hands on one of them and try it out.

Well its not really a review, mostly info & commentary based on what Lenovo showed me the other day.
Its got potential, but the size is going to throw off people searching for a true ultraportable; then they look at the price tag and give it another go
There really is TOO much plastic on that thing to be considered an ultraportable IMO, it looks pretty stocky. They did this of course to keep costs low and heat down (i.e. better cooling system), since the use of LV Core Duo's would drive the price up.
They don't have any plans to offer LV chips anytime soon either, same with WWAN; don't want to encroach on X60 space I'd imagine

Interesting. They make an ultraportable with S-Video, but purportedly the T60 doesn't have room for it.

Ultraportable with a 3-cell battery!? Don't go too far!
Also, all the X series weigh less, including X20, X21, X22, etc.
For $200, pick up a nice X20 from eBay. I'll stick with ThinkPads, for now.

Dell makes budget machines with 4-cell batteries...
Of course, we've got one kicking around with an 8-cell... but it's
NiMH. On a laptop purchased
new THIS YEAR.
BTW,
the Lenovo V100 will bring powerful ultraportables to a new price range for consumers.
Averatec, anyone? $749 ultraportables.
And, I suspect this, like Averatec's entry, is in the "12-inch (i|Power)Book" class. (Ironically, there's no 12" MacBook...

The Dell 4-cells are pathetic. The batteries are so light, I'd swear they have 4 AA rechargeable batteries inside (maybe they do?) They last about as long, too.
But I'm still laughing about a "new" laptop with a 3-cell battery and a DVD player. Unless Lenovo offers a Transmeta Crusoe CPU with that 3-cell, you'll barely get past the credits!
Remember the 3-cylinder Subaru Justy? No one else does either!

The "cells" in most laptop batteries are almost exactly that, AA sized batteries.
Also, I don't think a Transmeta would help much in this case. For all the work that had to be done, you get a marginal increase in battery life; an increase is an increase, but keep in mind that other parts of the laptop suck power too. Usually, if one component can decide it can scale back on power consumption (say the processor in this case), another component will be more than happy to take up the slack/extra power if there isn't some unified microcontroller monitoring all the power going to the various internal devices in the system.
And I remember both the 3-cyl Subaru and the 3-Cyl Metro...

Too bad it has "Acer-like" keyboard layout

If there was similar ThinkPad model. A 12" with internal DVD drive is still missing. Z60t is close but not ultraportable.

BION there might be one of those in the hanger in the near future.
In silver of course! Don't want to engender any brand confusion among the inhabitants.
Probably the only way to get my X31 back from my son...

It's been "announced" as in the pipeline for more than a month in the latest announcements to "Partners" from Lenovo.
But it's also been under the roses as it were, no discussion with the fourth estate or the public allowed.

A 13" widescreen with optical drive with 6 cell battery (not 4 or 8 cell, bad choices) that weighs under 4 lbs. might do it.

The notebook in the picture doesn't have "Thinkpad" on it, and there's no track stick. I wonder if this will even be marketed as a Thinkpad.

Nope.
It'll be marketed as the Lenovo 3000 Series V100.
Just like how the current Lenovo budget laptop is marketed as the Lenovo 3000 Series C100. Or the budget widescreen as the 3000 Series N100. Or the desktop as the J100.
Oh, and:

IBM gave up trying to correct the media reports that IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo. What happened was a sort of merger. IBM still owns over 25% of IBM PC.
Dell just formed a partnership with Google that will rattle Microsoft's monopoly cage.
Maybe the day will come sooner than I thought, when people realize Bill Gates is no computer whiz. He is more a field general business- warrior who knows how to violate FTC law and get away with it. I think of Gates as a computing industry version of the Dutch brothers who created legal pyramid scheme Amway & Mouth of the South Ted Turner, who legally stole programming from the networks via satellite feed.
