C200 Audio Issues/Freezing Mouse

Hello,

I just recently purchased a Lenovo 3000 C200 Laptop. I am a PC technician with over ten years of experience, and have performed clean installs on hundreds of PCs. However, I ran into HUGE problems with this one. OK, let's cut to the chase...

The mouse cursor frequently freezes up for anywhere between 1-10 seconds at a time. This only happens with the Realtek audio device enabled. If I disable it, the problem disappears. Here's what I have done to try to correct the problem:

1) Updated the BIOS
2) Installed the High Definition Audio Driver Package
3) Installed the Windows Update Modules for SP2 (required on custom-installs to allow windows to pick up the audio and modem drivers)
4) Installed all the latest device drivers from Lenovo, including the chipset)
5) Tried an older Audio driver (others on the internet have reported good luck with this method)
6) Installed the Lenovo Automatic Update software
7) Connected an external USB mouse
8) Reformated and did everything all over again in a different order.
9) Disabled Windows sounds (this cut the freeze-ups in half, but they're still there)

Strangely enough, it plays audio flawlessly. I've been around and around with technical support in Atlanta and they don't have a clue. This seems crazy to me since this seems to be a common issue with this model. Some others on the net have actually made mention of speaking with tech support in Atlanta about the same problem. Does anybody out there have any ideas? They've suggested sending it back for repair, but from what I've read, they have a tendency to send their "repaired" products back to the consumer without the problem actually being resolved. Besides, my client needs it by the 30th, and there's no way they'd have it back to me by then.

Thanks for all your help and I'm sorry for the long-winded post!

GEN,

Have you found any solution so far?.

I have the same problem, in other forum someone mention that the problem is when upgrade the realtek HD driver from the .5282 to the .5307, but I already try rollingback to the .5282 version and also try upgrading to the .5366 version available in the realtek home page.

Other person uninstall and disable his modem that also use High Definition Bus and work for him, but he did a reinstall with other microsoft package so hi probably has used the .5282 driver version.

In my case the laptop came with the .5307 version of the driver and some times (happend twice) the problem solves almost by it self. I also apened a request for support in the lenovo site, ...still waitting for a response.

BTW I have two c200 and both have the problem and also other 6 friends.

Hello,

yes, I did indeed find a solution. Once you install the .5307 driver, you CAN'T roll back to the .5282. You absolutely must reinstall Windows and make sure not to install the new driver. Once you install the .5307 driver it's all over. You can go back to the old version, but they problem still exists.

It's funny that the helpful people over at tech support had no idea what I was talking about. I talked to 4 different reps in Atlanta and they all wanted me to ship the unit back. This is amazing to me when you consider how common this problem is. Oh well, I hope this works for you!

Hi,

mine came with the new driver as well. I just did a clean install from an OEM XP Pro CD. Though in order to do a clean install, I had to also install a package from Lenovo that allowed XP to see the audio and modem devices in the first place. I think it was called User Update Modules or something like that. I've been trying to find it for you without much luck. if I do I'll let you know.

Any hope for a new driver update? Does this problem persist when you upgrade to Windows Vista?

No Vista attempts as of yet. As far as an updated driver goes, I hope they do something about this soon, because it's a pretty big problem that needs to be fixed.

As a side note, I found the update needed to make this laptop function correctly. It's the Microsoft UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) update (KB888111.EXE)

Here's what worked for me:

1) Clean install of Windows
2) Install Microsoft UAA update
3) Install old audio driver (.5282)

The old version of the driver can actually be downloaded on the HP website (of all places) at:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... R1002_USEN

For some reason, Microsoft has made it hard to find the kb888111 update online, but a google search will definitely find it for you.

Good Luck

GEN,

The K888111 it's also available in the .zip driver pack that can be downloaded from the realtek home page in the High Definition Audio Codec.

In the mean time I did an uninstall of the Realtek Driver, then uninstall the K888111 (ALL in Protected Mode) and then reinstalled the K888111 and the new Realtek driver .5307 (ALSO uninstalled the Modem High Definition Driver) and at this moment the problem doesn't appear, still I haven't reboot the laptop so It can back again.

Yea, I think I'm just going to put up with it until the new driver comes out...I don't have time to reinstall windows and my programs..I just got my comptuer 1 month ago and I really don't feel like doing a fresh install.

Keep me posted on any new updated drivers! Thanks for the info guys! Keep up the good work!

DOAR;

Try this, go to regedit and change the key named Acceleration to the value of 1 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\DirectSound\Mixer Defaults, for the moment that solves my problem.
