System Update 3.0 Error 76 from Package Index Server

Every time I run System Update 3.0 on my 3000 N100 (XP Pro SP2), I get 'Error 76 received from the Package Index Server. Please contact the Support Centre' after about 16%.
Has anyone else had this error, and what did you do to fix it?
I've tried this on multiple internet connections, so I don't think its my ISP or router blocking ports.
Lenovo just sent me a generic auto-response asking me to check my internet connection works.

Hi,
I am getting the exact same problem. I reinstalled about three times and now I am getting a different error "The Package Index Serve is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
I am a little miffed because manually installing updates for Migration Assistant and Rescue and Recovery caused me to rebuild in the past: I violated some installation hieracrchy that was undoable.
I rely on this program to get the hierarchy and honestly, I stopped reading the instructions years ago. I just take regular images and if something goes wrong I blow the partition away and reimage but with the R&R partition it doesn't work like that.
I talked to Lenovo and they were lame.
Keep me updated....
Peas!

Ok, now it doesn't crash until it 38% and I get a generic error that system update has crashed and you may lose all you work. If I don't click OK the program will continue to download updates and then during install prepearation locks at 95%.
Does anyone have problems with sys update?

Never once got it to complete, so I've uninstalled all the Lenovo junk from the machine. It runs so much faster now.
