I was browsing LaptopLogic this morning and stumbled across the following article...
LaptopLogic wrote:First "consumer" laptop from Lenovo gets a quiet launch in the U.S. with Face Recognition and Subwoofer!

<snip>
The Lenovo 3000 Y410 notebook has just been launched in the US (without an official press release!).

<snip>
The Y410 laptops are not directly available from Lenovo's online shopping site for US. One can get hold of it, by purchasing it from online stores like Office Depot, Micro Center and Staples. Pricing starts at $699 and up depending on the final config.

Update! LogicBUY.com reports Staples has a deal for $649 after rebate with Free Epson All in One Printer.
Y410 Notebook Enters the US Market with Impressive Specs

Of course, without a TrackPoint, it can't compete with a ThinkPad. And don't get me going on widescreen glossy displays. :roll:
Nevertheless, the price is right and the rest of the specs aren't bad. :)

Sigh, this laptop weighs 5.29 lbs. It looks like Lenovo is now focusing on mainstream laptops and has given up trying to compete with Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic and HP in the ultraportable category.

Actually got to play with a Y series laptop at MicroCenter a few days back (same day I bought my Toshiba T400 mp3 player) and it seemed nice enough. Kinda reminded me of a Vaio with the shape and style.

Specification looks good

Infact i like that features of veriface scanning with this model, also i like the idea of having 2.1 channel speaker system in this model.
also the system performance is good.

With few negatives
1) After having Dolby sound effect with this model the volume is too-low,
2) Basic setting with BIOS restricting us in doing anything
3) Still lenovo site has not updated the model number in their website for this model.

Watch out! The USA models Y410 have NO Bluetooth (yet).

No Bluetooth and No Cellular Option (though there are both bluetooth and 3G lights on the front of it). Other than that it is great. Negative is the 3rd party software was not well tested. The Norton Setup takes over the 1st boot making a mess of things (wanting to upgrade and register over the internet before you even had a chance to setup a network connection). It of course fails to update (since no network) and next reboot you get a blue screen crash.

Removing Norton via uninstall did not work, as it wanted the original Norton CD to remove (not included). But at Norton's web site there was a tool to remove ALL Norton programs (YAY). Once that was done, laptop started to work PERFECTLY and no problems or crashes.

We installed AVAST instead as a virus program.

Face Recognition is cool, but not very good. Only identifies face sometimes.

Rest of laptop is really really awsome, and lid closes magnetically without latches.
