Ctrl or shift locking-in on Lenovo 3000 N100 type 0768 41G

I'm encountering a weird problem, where suddenly and with no obvious cause, selection of items (files, text, whatever) starts becoming cumulative as though I've held down or locked the control or shift key :?. It happens in just about any application, including in Explorer etc. When it happens I try random combinations of shift, alt, ctrl, space etc.. On odd occasions (but with no obvious pattern) the problem stops :o ; most times it doesn't :( . It can then be extremely difficult to power off in a safe manner without losing data in all open applications. When it happened yesterday I persisted in trying to save information before exiting, but caused so much damage as a result that I had to carry out a system restore :x . Has anyone encountered this problem or knows what's causing it/how to prevent it :?: I'm running XP Pro SP 2 (which I had to reinstall a couple of months back). The problem has happened, irregularly, since new, both before and after the XP reinstallation.

I don't really see this as being a software or OS problem. Sounds like it's hardware related. Maybe there is something wrong with the keyboard.

I have the same problem every once in a while, it's maybe happened 10 times within 5 years of having the laptop.

What I do is just hit ctl a few times and it stops. Not sure why it happens but it doesn't happen enough for me to be concerned about it.

Maybe do all the windows updates go to sp3 and do all of the lenovo updates for your model from their site.

If it's happening that often for you...

That happens to me about once a week, you just have to find the key that is sticking and push it a couple of times.
