3000 N200 Can you upgrade the processor?

#1 Post by typobird » Thu Oct 02, 2008 6:55 pm

I notice the other day while I was taking things apart that the CPU is socketed.

What if any are the alternate processors that can be installed?

Thanks
T

I have taken a few apart and I believe you can upgrade the CPU. You will need to check what CPU the chipset will support.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Yes you can. Go to the Lenovo support website and check your laptops documentation to see the socket type, CPU type, bus speed, and maximum speed you can use. You usually want the highest speed and cache amount you can use if you're going to bother upgrading. MAKE SURE YOU DO IT RIGHT! There needs to be an extremely thin layer of good quality thermal compound between the processor and the fan or it will overheat. You should also clean any dust out of the heat sync and fans while you're there. Some processors require a bigger fan too, since a faster processor of the same type will be hotter, but I don't believe so in the n100. Read a few tutorials before attempting. You can void your warranty, and an aftermarket upgrade is not usually worth it on newer systems. Consider your options carefully.
