Chkdsk won't run on start up...

Hi,
After googling the web for a while and read lots of forum topics i have not found any clue for the following.
I run an XP home sp3 on Lenovo 3000. The problem is that i can not get chkdsk to start at start up. I have try it through the commond line, through drivers' properties. I swithed out every possible application that could access the c drive before chkdsk would start (firewall, antivirus, defrag program, winpatrol, etc.) No result.
Once i had the same trouble, than network connection needed to be shot down and than chkdsk stated, but not now.
Does anyone have an idea how to get this solved?
thanks
