Lenovo 3000 V100- SSD upgrade

Hi, I'm wondering whether the Lenovo 3000 V100 (XP OS), which is a SATA I machine as far as I can tell, can be upgraded to SSD with the SATA II upgrade kit from Kingston? SNV425-S2BN/64GB

Absolutely. You'll be capped on any heavy load operations like copy and pasting files, but most of the benefits of SSDs reside below the SATA I barrier.

SATA I is limited to 150MB throughput, while the drive can do SATA II 300MB, but like I said most of the benefits of SSD like the latency or the 4k writes are below SATA I speed. It's only in a few small cases like copying and pasting files, which put a heavy load on the controller, where the cap would limit your performance. The benefits of an SSD like the better performance and cool/quiet operation would outweigh cap in my opinion.

would there be any problems with size or width inserting it? also, I gather these are both MLC technology drives, should I try and find SLC?

As long as it's a 2.5" drive, which the Kingston is, you shouldn't have any problems. I think the MLC is fine. You'll have long since moved on when the drive hits its limits. The best performing drives now are the Intel drives, except if your goal is battery life. They come in 80GB and 160GB sizes. If you're patient you should be able to find the 80GB in the $175-200 range and the 160GB in the $350-400.

I installed the upgrade (Kingston SSD 64GB kit , which can be had now for about $100) and now the Lenovo 300 v100 flies like a rocket! 6-7 minutes XP boot time before, now its like 40 seconds at most.

^^ Yeah, I added a small/cheap SSD to an old Z61p, which had a 5400rpm drive, and saw almost as good of boot numbers as you did. Once booted up, my eyes bugged out a bit when I cranked up a few apps such as Excel, Word, etc. for the first time. Thought I had a NEW machine...can really add some more life to these old babies...
