Question about Ideapad S405-59351953

#1 Post by hyde » Wed Dec 05, 2012 11:30 pm

Hi Everyone,
I have been trying to get some information on this particular model with no much luck.
S405-59351953 has an AMD Ultrathin A6 Accelerated Processor. Does not provide any further information about clock speed, etc..
On top, it has a 4cell battery, but it is very thin and light.

Comes with 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and Integrated AMD Radeon HD 7500 and reportedly weighs exactly 4lbs.
Is this laptop worth $350 with no tax or shipping?
Just trying to find something to replace my wife's old compaq.

My other choice was N585 - 59343747 which has a DVD drive (S405 does not) and costs $295 with no tax or shipping.
I have until tomorrow before I lose out on these sales.

I guess these are referred to as 'consumer grade' computers from Lenovo, and for the price don't seem bad. I found the S405-59351953 here: http://www.staples.com/Lenovo-Ideapad-S ... uct_984632 at staples.com for $399 with free shipping, but tax would be added. That machine had same 4gb memory and 500gb hdd. There were mostly positive reviews.

I found the N585 - 59343747 here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-+Id ... 25&loc=PGR at bestbuy.com for $279. It has only 2gb ram and 320gb hdd, but it also has mostly positive reviews.

I have to say shiny, new, with Windows 8 is very nice, but personally I would be looking to spend that same amount here in the Marketplace and pick up a T400 or T410; or if I wanted smaller/lighter I'd look for an X200 or X220. I like the idea of Intel cpu's, and I especially like ThinkPad quality and upgrade-ability. /I made up that word/ :)

I have given laptops as gifts to my sons and my husband over the last several years, and they have never been disappointed to receive their Thinkpads, even though they were not bright/shiny/new -- very quickly a new plastic computer (even some IdeaPads) can show wear and tear, especially when compared to most Thinkpads. However, that's just my personal experience and thoughts.

If for your wife you are looking for brand new, either of those laptops looked good for the price -- I think the S405 looked better because of the memory and hdd. The S405 is more thin and lightweight than the N585, which makes it more portable. It has no optical drive, which is not a problem unless you watch lots of DVDs -- it's easy to plug in a USB CD/DVD for occasional use. The screens have the same 1366 x 768 resolution and are close in size -- 14" vs 15". I don't know anything about AMD cpu's, but a google search seemed to say the S405 was a faster quad core when compared to the dual core N585.

Hopefully one of our real Forum geeks will come by with their thoughts to guide you before you make your decision.

Thank you emtee3511, I found similar info from Staples but they also do not list details on processor, it is very odd, I am going to do a bit more search.

You mentioned N585 looked better because of memory and HDD but it does have less RAM compared to S405, maybe you meant price-wise? Surely if upgraded they would probably cost the same but S405 looks very nice and thin.

Good point on the DVD drive, with everything moving towards online streaming, I don't even know what to do with my DVD and BD collection.. So I don't think it would be missed. I never missed the optical drive with my x220.. I still bought one online just in case.

I edited my post to show what I had meant to say about the S405 having better specs.

I also forgot to add this AMD website for you to check out their processors: http://shop.amd.com/us/All/ModelsPerLin ... deonhd7310
It was late last night when I posted :?

Edit: Have you already checked Lenovo Outlet?

Thanks, I checked the outlet but I could not really find something that was substantially better at a similar price point.
I mean $350 and $295 respectively were pretty good prices.

Almost all thinkpads are either out of stock or over $500.

Regarding the processor, it is really vague, there are reports that this could be quad or it could be dual and it is not clear.
Specs state CPU with AMD Radeon HD 7500

http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon ... 861.0.html
A6-4455M
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-A-Seri ... 885.0.html

Anyway, it looks like sale is over early (I guess they sold enough of those) so the price is back up to $500 now..

Bummer :(
At least you have done your research and now have a better idea of what you are looking for.

At the AMD link I posted, under "Core Count" for the S405, it listed the number "4" -- so I was guessing (not sure) that meant quad core -- (edit: finally found specs on amazon.com -- the S405 is dual core.) For the N585, the Core Count was listed as "2", so again I was guessing dual core -- I think I read a review somewhere on the N585 that said dual core, but my senior brain can't remember.

Good luck if you are looking to purchase by Christmas as there should still be some good sales available :thumbs-UP:

EDIT:
I checked online for your two preferred laptops and found still available:

IdeaPad S405 at Buy.com for $424.95 with free shipping (and I think no tax, but not sure.)

IdeaPad N585 at Amazon.com for $315 including shipping (not sure about tax.)

IdeaPad N585 at Best Buy for $279(2gb ram) or $299(4gb ram) plus tax and in-store only

Found it back on sale and pulled the trigger on S405-59351953
It sounds like it is very difficult to upgrade, I am going to have to do a lot of digging to find information on replacing RAM (there is apparently only one module bay) and battery (held by screws) and the back plate is actually a complete one piece..
I understand this place is thinkpads (and I love my thinkpad) but isn't there any love for ideapads? Or is there an ideapads.com that I don't know of. :|

PS: you posted same bestbuy link for both S and N above.. and this time it wasn't even that late! :jhem:

"PS: you posted same bestbuy link for both S and N above.. and this time it wasn't even that late!"
:) At my age anything I post after 3pm should be suspect...

Really glad you got your machine -- and yes, the Forum has an IdeaPad subforum you can check out -- I'm not going to post a link, as I might end up sending you to Apple or Dell
Just check the Board Index and you'll find "IdeaPad Series" :thumbs-UP:

:thumbs-UP: Thanks emptee, don't know about your age but your help is appreciated. 8) I posted this in ideapad already but it looks like the section is not that active. Can't wait to receive this, hopefully wifey will be happy with this new laptop.
