IdeaPad U310: What to use 32GB SSD cache drive for?

#1 Post by jayton4 » Tue Dec 10, 2013 8:15 pm

Just picked up a really sweet 4375XD9 off the Outlet, and was pleasantly surprised that there was an HMM available for it. Other IdeaPad's that I had worked with in the past did not have an HMM.

The plan is to make this into my "HackBook Air" with OS X Mavericks. The first order of business is to dump the 500GB 7mm Hitachi drive. The replacement is an Intel 520 Series 180GB 7mm from an X220, exactly like I have in my T420s.

Obviously I will not need any caching, as the specs on the Intel drive appear to be double that of the 32GB cache drive in my tests using HDTune Pro. I'm just wondering if anyone has found a good or interesting purpose for this 32GB SSD?

I've heard of people using it for hibernation, although I've never done that myself...

I have decided to use the 32GB SSD cache drive for Windows 7 64bit. Although the main purpose of the machine will be for OS X 10.9, I decided to keep a Windows install handy for the Battery Reset utility and the Fan Cleaning utility (spins the fan at max speed alternating between forward and reverse). The hardware transformation is complete, and the OS X 10.9 install begins today.

Here is a rundown of the upgrades so far:
Intel 520 Series 180GB 7mm SSD
8GB DDR3L 1600 Crucial Ballistix
BIOS whitelist removal
AW-NB037H WiFi + Bluetooth combo card
U.S. Keyboard

TIP: You do not need to remove the Fan/heatsink assembly to swap out the keyboard on a U310. The HMM states that removing the fan/heatsink is required, and that is NOT TRUE. Also, the battery does not need to be completely removed, just partially lifted a little to give yourself room to push the keyboard out from the bottom.
