Touchpad occasional problem--how to diagnose?

Hi
My z51 occasionally has this problem: When using the touchpad, the pointer becomes sluggish/unresponsive for a few seconds.
This never happens when I use a USB mouse.
I attempted to fix this by updating the Elan Synaptic touchpad driver using Lenovo's website. First I deleted the current driver (version 11.15).
Then, I went to Lenovo's website and used my laptop's serial number to download and install Lenovo's touchpad Elan Synaptic driver (version 11.4).
Vers. 11.4 seems to have fixed the original problem. But now there is a new problem. The pointer today completed froze. When I rebooted, the pointer totally disappeared. Then, I uninstalled Ver. 11.4, and rebooted. After rebooted, the pointer and touchpad is working again. And I see the Windows is now using Ver. 11.15 again. And the original problem still occurs occasionally.
Is it a hardware problem?
