PC Connection's offering the barebones S10 with XP home for $299 and free shipping.

Is the start of a major downward trend, even for models with more ram and bigger hard drives? Or is it just a one-off promotion?

This offer is not only a great price, but its for the new S10e model. Featuring Splashtop, the new quick start system. Here's a link:

Also this is no barebones model as all Lenovo IdeaPad S10 models are full featured. The basic differences are simply ram and hdd size.
Cheers, from the keyboard of my IdeaPad S10...

Looking up the product code (418739U) on Lenovo it also shows this model has bluetooth built in.
I just ordered one.

just a note:
s10e (418739U) is 10.1" LED-backlit glossy screen and 1024x576 resolution, where s10 is 10.2" (non-LED?) antiglare and 1024x600. not a huge difference, but some may like to know. other than that (and hopefully the included bluetooth on s10e) they are identical I think.
I also ordered one!
buy.com and pc connection have it for 299 free shipping. got mine from ewiz who had it 289 (thru google shopping menu. but you don't have to use google payment or anything like that) and non-free shipping, mainly because I have always liked ewiz and would rather support them.
now the question will be: just put kubuntu on it, or see if lenovo will ship some free SLED install media?

I THINK there are a few other differences. I just learned these after placing the order, but I think I am still satisfied. The S10e has a glossy screen, rather than the matte screen of the S10, and is a slightly smaller size (and resolution) as was previously noted. Also, the S10e has a quickstart type linux partition that allows use of a few simple built-in apps without booting the main OS.

the quickstart/splashtop (thought it was in bios/flash, not on disk?) should be available to all s10 models, eventually. I think. likewise the VeriFace thingy...

I know you can download Veriface for existing S10's, they've been talking about it apparently working even in XP over at s10lenovo.com. But I don't know about the splashtop. I'd assume it's possible.

Well, it appears the free shipping is very fast as well. UPS says mine will be here tomorrow.

Actually, as soon as I saw that there was no bluetooth in there, I ordered one of those.
Thanks,

And when it got here, no bluetooth! I ordered the kit now though.
