Can I use a thinkpad hard drive in an Ideapad?

I had an R61 for about a year until a door (yes, a door) fell on it. The fix was too expensive so I opted for a new notebook. I recently ordered an Ideapad Y series and I want to get some files off the HDD from the R61. Can I swap in the hard drive, transfer files to an external, then put the new hard drive back? Or are the HDDs not interchangeable?
Thanks for any help.
Matt

You can do it though there's probably going to be driver issues. Why not buy a case for the old drive? When you're done getting the files off, you can use it for backups.

I can do that? How does that work; Do I just buy a "case" put my hard drive in it and connect it via a USB to the new laptop? What kind of case am I looking for?

Yup, you can do it. SATA on the inside, USB on the outside.
