Hi Group,

I'm looking to upgrade from a R51e laptop and an Ideapad Y550p is available at $Au1250. It's offerred on eBay with the item # 160434615974 and seems to be a reasonable spec.

Intel i7 quadcore with 500GByte HDD and 4 Gb ram.

Looking for opinions as to whether this is a reasonable deal. Call the price $1100 US dollars.

Thanx in advance for replies, and any info on the Y series hardware would also be welcomed

AlanD

Hmmm, for $270 more including shipping to Australia I can sell you a T410 that is loaded with better specs than the Y550P. It's a much better machine ...

It qualifies for International Warranty Service -

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the response and apologies for the slow answer.

I think I'll pass on this, mostly because the extra $270 (US?) takes it beyond the budget I've set and also my applications require a high capacity drive - I couldn't see any indication of any drive other than the 80 GB SSD, but I may have missed a slave being on board.

But I'll investigate the T series. Are they built to a more robust standard?

Cheers

Alan

Harry's T410 is a much much MUCH better deal. The T-series Thinkpads are Lenovo's very best laptop line designed for professionals, whereas the Ideapads are designed for casual home use and are clearly secondary. The 15.6" 1366x768 screen of the Y550P Ideapad is particularly despicable -- that's a very low res for such a large screen. And in this particular auction, it's not clear how much warranty this Y550P carries, whereas Harry's T410 still has close to 3 years. If you don't like Harry's SSD, sell it for $150 and replace it with a $70 500GB drive. Harry is including the recovery CDs, with which you can easily install all the original software on the new 500GB HDD.

EDIT: I just noticed that since Harry's post above, he has dropped the price of his T410 twice, from $1,300US to $1,100US, so now it's almost within your budget. Grab it before it goes to eBay, mate!

Thanks PW. The offer has been withdrawn for the T410. Thanks for the interest.

:) I was into Macs before I was into Thinkpads...go figure. In fact I first got started here by trading a Macbook Pro for a T60 with Bill Morrow, and the rest is history. I'm not a die-hard anything really, just a laptop/hardware enthusiast.
