Is it possible to use a GaN charger on a X220?

#1 Post by DC69 » Thu Aug 08, 2024 10:41 am

Hello everyone.

I have been thinking about replacing all my chargers with a single GaN charger, due to the obvious advantages in size and the ability to charge multiple devices from a sigle outlet. Most of my equipment charges via USB-C so I'm assuming there won't be a problem, but I also have an X220T with the good old yellow barrel port. I have seen some people convert the X220 charging port to USB C but that is honestly a job I don't want to tackle if the advantage is simply the ability to use a type-C charging cable. I am more inclined to simply use one of these type-c to DC adapters: https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/1005007090595778.html even more so because I am planing on getting a slice battery and as far as I know you can't change the port on those because batteries are sealed components.

That would be the first question. By changing the port will it charge faster, gain PD protocol compatibility or do anything I can't do with the adapter? Is there any added value besides aesthetics and the convenience of using a "universal" type-c cable?

And secondly, assuming I get, say, one of those: https://eu.baseus.com/products/gan2-4-p ... arger-100w with a 100W rating USB-C cable and one of those adapters will I have any trouble using this setup with the X220 and slice battery?

Thank you for reading.

Hey, I got an GaN charger (Baseus, 65W) from Aliexpress and it is working, but a bit slower charging than the original one. Unfortunately my microphone from headphones, they got buzz with it, so need to use my old charger for that.
And there are also cabels micro-USB to normal X220 chargingport, so no need of modifications :)

Thanks for the reply.

I have been digging a bit more and apparently there shouldn't be a problem because the adapters are supposed to include a PD chip to tell the charger what the correct parameters (watts, volts and amps) are, efectively replacing the PD chip present on devices with a type-c charging port.

Anyway I will test everything first with a multimeter and post the results here.
