Does anybody use his X301, Type 2774 with 8GB RAM?
I found different sites. Some state that 8GB are supported some state that 8GB are not supported.

According to this thread, the X301 supports up to 16GB of RAM.

Not sure why Lenovo's specifications say 3/4GB, maybe it's because 32-bit OS was the default pre-load option.

BTW, that thread comes up pretty top if you google for "x301 8gb", there are a couple of posts about this as well.

P.S. At first glance, I thought "8RAM" is a new type of RAM, like PRAM, MRAM...

BTW, the "type" usually defines different configuration options within a single product line, and AFAIK most, if not all, share the same mainboard. It's usually the mainboard (or more specifically, the chipset) that dictates how much RAM your system can handle.

i had 8GB in my X301 and can personally confirm that it works.

the 3/4gb is probably because it could be preloaded with xp32 (3gb soft limit), and it could only be configured with 4gb from the factory, so they did not bother changing as larger chips came out - the T61 is the same - it says the limit is 4gb, they will use 8gb without issue

I thought the 4gb limit was written because when the specs for the X300 were published that was the limit of the RAM sticks.
Whatever the reason, 8GB definitely works.
However it seems to have a significant drain on the battery

i can run my X301 with 8 gigs of ram, have done so for a while.

Hi all

I have been running my X301 with 8GB no problem. However, I heard that the X301 supports 16GB maximum, so just tried two Corsair 8GB SODIMMs and the X301 failed to boot, with only the blue ThinkVantage light lit.

It didn't work with just one module either. Do I need some kind of BIOS upgrade to support 8GB SODIMM modules?

the X301 does not support 8GB modules whatsoever.   wherever you heard or read that was unfortunately incorrect.   this is a limitation of the chipset, not the BIOS.

hopefully you can return the modules for a refund.

apparently it seems that you were the one in charge for this 16GB total ram rumor loooong time ago ---> see here <---

anyway, I do think that the Cantiga GM45 chipset in the X301 can support up to 16 GB RAM but ONLY using DDR3-1066 modules!
But maybe erik knows something more already about this chipset and can confirm us for sure if its supported or not

I think that probably our friend tried the common Corsair at 1333 mhz, and thats why they are not recognized.
At least ONE.
Try with 1066 ones and it will work, maybe

Yes I used 8GB 1333 modules. I can't see 8GB 1066 modules for sale anywhere, but I'll keep trying..

X301 cannot even see 4GB 1333 modules (tried this myself personally), so thats why they couldnt work... they are just NOT compatible

Try 1066, and they will work, as in the Macbook -- I send you a PM with the link where you can buy these modules ---

You're indeed right about the X301. I have two of these machines, actually.
In my opinion it's the best ThinkPad X ever made!

I cannot be sure anyway if the 16 GB will be supported.... so I take no responsability if you buy them and they will not be recognized. We should check about the Cantiga chipset, if it can accept such amount of memory!

EDIT: puke, i have maybe a bad news! I have tried to make a search about our chipset and it seems that officially it can really take a max of 8GB RAM... with 1066.
look HERE and scroll down to bottom to reach GM45. G45 can, but GM45 not

thanks for pointing that out.   i've updated that post to prevent any confusion.   this info was originally relayed to me by an industry colleague which i took without question.   subsequent tests unfortunately showed that 8GB modules couldn't be addressed.

Got the 1.6Ghz X301 , 2776.
Just bought two Kingston DDR3-1333 4GB's.
Did not work at all.
Then i tryed Kingston HyperX 8 gig kit,2 x 4GB's at DDR3-1600.
Works great and runs fast.
I know the system is only running the ram at DDR3-8500 speed.
But strange that the 1333 did not work but the 1600 does.

Were the 1333 chips KVR? I suspect the HyperX are tested for a wider range than KVR.

I cant remember the number on them now.But it was the Kingston Value Ram.
