X220 shuts self off, doesn't turn back on

Alright so just earlier today my X220 powered off completely on its own twice in a row. These first two times I could turn it right back on and get back to work, but after it occurred a third time every time I tried to turn it back on the indicator lights and thinklight would turn on, then there would be a single beep and it would shut right back off (before anything appeared on the screen)

I pulled the battery out and removed and reinserted the ram and it now seems to be running fine, but I just wanted to make sure that there aren't any underlying issues that may need to be addressed after this occurrence. The battery is still removed and I am running just off of the power cord. Any thoughts?

Intel Core i7 running 4 GB of RAM currently.

May be relevant that I've been working on a fairly complex assembly file in Pro-E/Wildfire 5 but I've never had any issues with this computer and that program before, even when rendering complex assemblies at extremely high resolution.

Overheating comes to mind.
Clean the vents and the CPU cooler with canned air.
stop the fanblades from turning (with e.g. a toothpick) to avoid over-revving.
Maybe fresh Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste between CPU and cooler may be required.
