2 short beeps and no display on X200; m.b. defective?

#1 Post by omero72 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 7:36 am

Hello

I've found a Lenovo X200 for sale on the Internet at a suitable price but in the boot up, it gives two short beeps and the display doesn't come up, the seller says. According to manual that's caused by:

1- System board
2- DIMM

The seller also says that this problem has first come up after he sent X200 to a buyer, i.e. it might have occured during shipment.
So the problem might be in the DIMM, because the RAM's might have moved in DIMM.

Or is the motherboard defective?
Is it possible to repair this X200 without buying a new/2nd hand motherboard?

There is no way to know without seeing the machine. I would swap the memory first and see what happens. If that didn't work, I would pull the battery and the cmos battery, then put both back. That would reset everything. That process is free to try. As it says in the manual, it is most likely the memory or the system board

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try them if I get that X200.

Today I 've got my hands on this X200 and I update the beep codes as:

One long and two short beeps, and a blank LCD.

for which the X200 manual says:

1. System board.
2. LCD assembly.
3. DIMM.

I've tried swapping the SDRAM and disconnecting the main battery and the CMOS battery, still the same beep codes: One long and two short beeps.

The motherboard can distinguish between a faulty SDRAM and a working one, because when I put a faulty SDRAM (PC3-8500), it gives:

Three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep.

first and then the

One long and two short beeps, and a blank LCD.

It can charge the battery when the power adaptor is plugged.

The motherboard 's got a FRU 44C5319 and it is sold on eBay for $320 which is quite expensive.
