On multiple occasions i found the battery depleted and the thinkpad went into hibernation after I put it to sleep.
Is there anyway I can check what triggers the wake-up from sleep? Not only the battery problem, but it also heats up a lot due to being in the bag.

I used to have a Logitech USB Receiver that woke up my ThinkPad.

Thanks, I have nothing hooked up (other than SD card in the slot which does not do anything).
Could it be latch that it moves and wakes up the computer? I don't want to set it to go back to sleep after 3 or 5 minutes because I use the laptop a lot without battery and I don't want it to sleep when I am downloading and go get some water..

Do you use Power Manager? There is something about enabling wake timers under the Sleep mode. Maybe it's that??

I use the power manager, but I never find my laptop awaken when I leave it on my desk.
It is only when it's in the bag, and after I move around a bit. I tried playing with the lid, it doesnt look like lid causes it wake up.
I have to check again, the thing is it goes into hibernation because battery depletes and I find it very warm, so there is no way to tell when or how it woke up.

If you unplug it and put it in your bag overnight, does it wake up by itself? If not, then maybe a key is getting pressed when it is being jostled in your bag. I use the Fn key to wake my X220 from standby. I don't carry my X220 in a bag and have not experienced your issue. I carry my X220 in a metal-sided briefcase for greater protection.

Perhaps hibernation would work better for you when carrying your X220 in your bag.

Are you using the fingerprint reader? I never setup the fingerprint reader on mine. I believe I've read the fingerprint reader works even with the laptop turned off.

On a side note: I read just today that a linux kernel regression sets a RTC wake timer that wakes up some laptops after several minutes even when powered off. There is a workaround to write a different wake setting to the RTC while booted in Linux. Not sure if Windows ever had a similar problem. I suppose a Windows update or BIOS update would address that issue if it exists.

Looking just now I see that BIOS version 1.21 addresses the following (current version is 1.25):

- (New) Disabled keyboarding while the lid was closed to avoid unexpected key
input when the computer was held with the lid closed.

Thanks. Actually I tried hibernation only to find it to boot even slower than actual restart! Sleep works perfect for me thanks to very long battery life. I rarely have to plug it as long as I keep it sleeping. The trip in the bag is a short one maybe 30 minutes at most an hour if not shorter.

Yes, I use fingerprint reader, swipe and it logs in for me, and since I leave it in sleep, wakes up and my e-mails keep showing while I am grabbing my greasy meal (not that greasy)... and I don't have to type my long password I just wipe my finger and go (pinky, not greasy!)

This morning, same thing, and the thinkpad was not even on the move.
I went to pick up my thinkpad which was in its bag overnight, only to find the bag very warm, and the thinkpad even warmer.
It woke up and depleted the battery, then hibernated.

Where can I find out more about exactly when it resumed from sleep and then hibernated?
Is it possible that Wake On Lan is causing this? Maybe some network at home pings it and thinkpad wakes up?

Fix "Sleep Mode Randomly Waking Up" Issue in Windows Vista
I’ve been having a very frustrating issue with Windows Vista on my HP notebook: I put the computer into sleep mode, close the lid, and then unplug the network cable… and the computer wakes back up, typically when it’s already safely in my laptop bag, so I don’t notice until I get to my destination and the battery is nearly dead.

Turns out there’s a very easy fix for this problem: Disable the Wake on LAN feature. Essentially, the computer is set to automatically wake up from network traffic, which seems to include pulling out the cable.

To change this setting, type in Device Manager into the start menu search box, and then browse down to “Network Adapters” and find your network adapter. In this case, mine is ”Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet”.

Right-click it and choose Properties from the menu. In the resulting dialog, choose the Power Management tab.

Uncheck the box next to “Allow this device to wake the computer” to solve the problem. You’ll notice that there’s a warning about having the option enabled in the first place.

Like I thought someone had the issue with Wake On LAN, --- But the problem is that I never, ever use LAN. I only use Wireless, and there is no Wake on W-LAN option (it's greyed out).
In the LAN, there is a "magic packet" setting, which means only that can turn the computer on.
Anyway, I disabled it even though I never use it. Let's see if it makes any difference.

I have another theory, is it possible for automated back up to wake up the computer? I did not have anything set up for a back up last night (mine is every Monday night at 11pm) but maybe it is antivirus scanning or something else.

Scheduled tasks can wake up a laptop from Suspend. I used to use this feature to make my T42 an alarm clock.
