X220 Harddrive keeps spinning and slows laptop to a crawl

I am a proud owner of a X220 laptop. Have had it less than 3 months but I have just started see some significant problems in the last 7 days.

I had noticed that right from day 1, this nicely configured laptop took very long to boot up and shut down. In the last 7 days, the hard drive wants to keep spinning all the time, it brings the laptop to a crawl, I ultimately end up killing the laptop by holding down the power button and rebooting several times a day.

To my knowledge, I have not installed any new softwares or made any changes to config. It takes sometime only a few minutes to act up and sometime the idle time take the laptop down. I have checked the taks manager and it shows that Idle process is taking up more than 90% CPU and rest are like 1% or 2% usage.

Could my hard drive be failing? I would apprecite any wisdom as to what could be going wrong on a new Win 7 x64 laptop with plenty of horsepower.

TIA

You might want to run the hard drive diagnostic in the System Toolbox.

Will do. I did a few weeks back but maybe things have changed. This is very, very frustrating and makes the X220 unusable

Just so you know. In the title of the thread you have put X200 not X220. Might affect the replies you get.

Thanks so much for catching my error. I have fixed the heading.
I have rebooted 14 times just today. I am trying to run one scanner after another. Still have not nailed the problem.
