X220 Harddrive keeps spinning and slows laptop to a crawl

I am a proud owner of a X220 laptop. Have had it less than 3 months but I have just started see some significant problems in the last 7 days.
I had noticed that right from day 1, this nicely configured laptop took very long to boot up and shut down. In the last 7 days, the hard drive wants to keep spinning all the time, it brings the laptop to a crawl, I ultimately end up killing the laptop by holding down the power button and rebooting several times a day.
To my knowledge, I have not installed any new softwares or made any changes to config. It takes sometime only a few minutes to act up and sometime the idle time take the laptop down. I have checked the taks manager and it shows that Idle process is taking up more than 90% CPU and rest are like 1% or 2% usage.
Could my hard drive be failing? I would apprecite any wisdom as to what could be going wrong on a new Win 7 x64 laptop with plenty of horsepower.
TIA
