x200 problem connecting to public secure networks

So I apologize in advance, I am not very good with networks but I will do my best to explain the situation and then provide any further information for people.
So I have no problem connecting to my home wireless networks (both locations are WPA secured and connect easily), I can also connect to non-secured connections. However, when I want to connect to a secured public wifi at a coffee shop or other location I almost instantly get the "Windows is unable to connect to **********" and troubleshooting fails to correct the problem. The specific connection I have failed to connect to is a WPA-PSK connection if that makes a difference. Also, I know other people can connect without difficulty and my phone (android) also easily connects to these networks.
Things I have tried:
-reformatted and reinstalled win7
-checked all drivers are updated
-disable ipv6
-manually adding network
I have struggled with this for a long time and have trolled the forums to no avail. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKYOU!!!!
