"No Wireless WAN support" = no possibility of mSATA?

#1 Post by fewfiet » Thu May 03, 2012 8:32 am

Hi Thinkpads Forums!

I'm considering purchasing a X220 and installing a mSATA drive as has been recommended here multiple times. When customizing the purchase the only WWAN option is "No Wireless WAN support". As far as I understood the mSATA installation instructions, it would be using the slot where the WWAN card would normally go. If this model doesn't have WWAN support does that mean that it won't have this slot (and thus I won't be able to install the mini hdd)? Or will the slot still be there, just without a preinstalled WWAN card?

I tried chatting with Lenovo's support about this, but they had no idea what I was talking about and weren't really much help.

Thank you!,
Greg

Where are you looking and what other options did you select? When I customize through lenovo.com it shows "mobile broadband ready" and "Qualcomm Gobi 3000" as the options.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700

The central X220 option ("New! Web Special!")

I've selected the following options:

Genuine Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, IPS, 2x2 Antenna
Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor graphics with dynamic frequency
4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
320GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
9 Cell Li-Ion Battery
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN
No Wireless WAN support
1 Year Depot/Express Warranty

If I customize either of the other two X220 configurations those are the options I have too. But this "New! Web Special!" is a much better deal. It might be a deal breaker though if for some reason it doesn't have a slot for the mSATA. I can't imagine they would take it out, but I'm not that technical to know if that's a possibility.

I just chatted with another rep who told me:
It is still going to have the express card slot (the no WAN support just means that it does not have a mobile broadband antenna in the display). It'll have the express card slot though. And it will be open.
Great news! I think I'm in.

It is still going to have the express card slot (the no WAN support just means that it does not have a mobile broadband antenna in the display). It'll have the express card slot though. And it will be open.
That makes sense. Glad you found a more knowledgeable rep.
