x200 cannot boot when on a new battery

#1 Post by jarasyk » Fri May 11, 2012 4:25 pm

I bought a new battery for my X200 Tablet. The battery is a cheap non-original part bought via amazon from ukpowersmart for 38 GBP (this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B003O7GM9E ).

The problem: my notebook cannot boot when on the battery. The boot process is interrupted shortly after BIOS POST with a message "0190: Critical low battery error". This happens always, and of course the battery is fully charged. When this happens the green battery LED under a display is not lit, as if there wasn't any battery installed. I can boot the notebook only when I connect it to an AC adapter. Then it boots correctly, but the battery is still not recognized in the OS (ubuntu). Only after about 10 minutes of work on the AC the battery suddenly comes online, the green battery LED under the display lights up, and from then on everything works as it should.

I still have my original old battery. The old battery works without a hitch, the notebook has no problem booting from it. Sometimes (not always) the following trick helps: I boot on the old battery, then switch the notebook off, quickly replace the battery pack with the new battery, then the notebook often boots fine even on the new battery.

So, has anyone seen such a peculiar behaviour in a new battery pack? Is there anything I can do before filling a claim at the seller?

Cheers, Jara

Return the battery, it's not fully compatible. Who knows what other damage the battery may do. When you buy 3rd party batteries you also take a risk that it will not be fully compatible. I'm not saying that non oem bats are always a problem but if you must buy one go to a large reputible vendor not some supplier with the cheapest price(imo). Then again you did buy thru Amazon so you shouldn't have a problem returning it and it may just have been a defective battery.
