Seagate momentus xt and windows 7 problems

#1 Post by syrahnose » Sun May 20, 2012 10:40 pm

I upgraded my hard drive to Seagate momentus xt

I migrated to momentus xt 750 'hybrid' hard drive on my thinkpad x200 a month ago. I've had several issues with windows 7. The search function no longer works, all of windows troubleshooting services refuse to start, and I keep getting messages stating I don't have genuine windows. When I download the windows verification exec, it refuses to run.

Is there a problem coming from my old Hitachi 500 7200, and going to this hybrid format.

Running my lenovo thinkvantage trouble shooting software I keep getting failed tests on 'targeted read test failure (WHD10-NYJ) and 'Smart Short Shelf' test (WhD16-YO4).

But windows disk scan didn't seem to find problems.

G'Day there
not sure if you installed the Lenovo version of 'win7' or retail one

The XT = has a 8GB Nand partition which is often used by windows to Boot - and R&R will often not be 'allwoed' to read that section...also since I have not used X3xx series machine for over 8 yrs , am not sure Win7 is on MS approved Win7 list - check Hardware Approved listings pls

SO best solution is to - Install Lenovo version - FRESH install , and that will give R&R = acceess and thus able to CREATE A RECOVERY DISK(s)...

Hope this helps

How exactly did you migrate to the Momentus XT? Did you clone an existing installation? If so, with what software, and how are the two drives connected when cloning?

Thanks for your input. My laptop is an x200 (2 Duo cpu P8600 2.4ghz) which came with vista, but was bought at the transition period to Win 7, so was sent a Win 7 Home Premium upgrade disk when they were available a month later. Or so I remember, its been a while. Double checking I see the disk has Lenovo system written on it.

I cloned this new drive (already having cloned 2 previous upgrade drives without trouble) copying directly off my previous Hitachi 500gb 7200. I swapped new clean drive into the laptop and then cloned from older drive via usb connection. I used Seagates disk wizard to clone.

I was hoping not to have to go back and do a clean rebuild, fearing it would go back to Vista R and R, then require the win 7 disk upgrade again (tedius and time consuming) although maybe the benefits of improved speed are worth it.

Thanks again for your input. I'm surprised that this new hybrid hd would not be as seamless as previous hd upgrades.

IMHO..you might want to use the previous 'recovery disks' to install win7...
<sorry I misread -thought you were talkin about much older x3xx>

X201 (tablet) - should run Win7X64 very nicely. My nephew has one @UoCant. with Win7+ OSX(touchOs5.1)+Linux that I help him set up early Feb this year.. on seperate partitions. His data drive is external drive - and main drive is same as yours ( 750GB seagate)

FYI - you can use Acronis True Image to copy any Hard Drives (demo one works ok) for any windows - should work. Also suggest if you did create previous win7 'recovery disc" you can use those to 'install' in the new (preformated drives) and you should get lenovo recovery paritions as per factory..

Hope this helps
Cheers

Well, failing a SMART test is certainly a bad sign. Have you tried Seagate's own diagnostic software yet? It's called Seatools and come in both Windows and DOS boot disk versions. Try doing some tests with that, and if it still fails, consider returning the drive.

My guess is that you can install Windows 7 straight from the Lenovo disks without having to restore Vista first.

I have a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB installed in my x201t, and there were a lot of problems getting the disk to clone correctly (specifically, the recovery partition, which seems to have some non-standard formatting or something).

I was eventually able to get a successful duplication, by using my Recovery CDs to do a full recovery to the blank Momentus XT (thus creating a fresh recovery partition on the new drive), and then subsequently cloning/re-sizing only the main partition of my old drive over. Works perfectly now.

It's now failing the targeted read test and the short shelf test. So perhaps a HD failure problem.

I've tried running seatools, but it won't open because it says I need .NET 4.0v. When I try to download that, it fails to initialize. Just as the software from Microsoft to check Genuine Win 7 license.

On Seagate forum someone suggested that Win 7 isn't recognizing the original license because I've upgraded to 3 hard drives now. Which seems odd. They tell me to contact Microsoft for new key. This seems odd, as I'm only changing HDs not rest of machine. But the major change of hybrid might be triggering Win 7 to see a whole new machine. Crazy thing is I can't get Genuine check software to install to counter that.

All this is getting a bit convoluted. I guess only choice is to go back and reformat new drive with original Vista Rescue disks and Win 7. Then recheck drive for errors. Hope reformat corrects errors.

I wish I could use the Seagate Tools to circumvent all this extra work.

Thanks for all this input and taking your valuable time.

You can use the DOS boot disk version of Seatools, which is independent of any OS on the hard drive.

I wanted to thank you all for the help.

In the end Icontacted Microsoft and they provided a good solution.

The common cause for these mismatches is a faulty Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver
Download and install the latest version from....
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... iid=dc_rss
then run another MGADiag report and post the results.

I ran this and it fixed my Windows problems.

The hard drive obviously has its own problems, possibly causing the issues with Windows.

Seatools found failures on random read and smart short shelf tests. I've contacted Seagate last week about warranty and replacement via email link through Seagate web site, but there has been no response so far.

I didn't expect this drive to crash after 1 month's use. Anyone else have problems with this drive's relaibility?
