No.

X series have CPUs soldered to the motherboard, not socketed like the rest of ThinkPads.

You'd have to swap an entire board.

If I have a soldering solution, what is the top CPU the chipsets of the following can handle ... ?
X31
X60S
R61
3000 C100

Thank you

R61 does not have a soldered CPU, but a socketed one and the top AFAIK - with a modded BIOS - is X9000.

For X31 - theoretically speaking - should be 2.1 Ghz.

For X60S - once again theoretically speaking - Core 2 Duo T7600 2.33 Ghz.\

No clue on 3000 series - never touched it.

What type of a "soldering solution" do you have? A re-balling machine?

Wow, an X60S will support a Core 2 Duo T7600 2.33 Ghz. I'm impressed. Would allow 4GB RAM or did Lenovo cripple the hardware by not connecting all the pipes?

Yes, I found a tech company that's experimenting on boards of another make with a reballing machine.
It's unknown if the laptops' cooling will resolve the additional heat of different CPUs.
Adding copper shims was suggested.

Chipset on all of these machines supports 3GB only...and there's nothing we can do about that.

But bear in mind that the CPU in question is around $100...

Thank you for your insite and knowledge.
I was thinking a T7200 for my X60S.

Why not just buy a full-spec'd X60 or X61 then? Unless you have an ultralight screen on that X60s, why hold on to it?

I do hope that your friends know what they're doing...

My X60S is type 1702-68U.
How would I check the screen?

A T7200 or T7400 can be had for less than $100 if when money is available.
I'm out of work. Money is a huge factor.

I know that T7200/7400 can be had for way less than $100. However, you were asking for a fastest CPU that the chipset supports - which is T7600 - and that one is still around a bill...

You have a standard screen, not an ultralight.

The cooling and the chipset on the x60s is set-up for low-voltage CPU only.
