Two SSDs In X220 At Once Possible? SATA SSD and mSATA?

#1 Post by epu » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:08 pm

Question:Just upgraded from an X200T to an X220! It has a 128GB SSD. Can I also install an mSATA SSD to have two SSDs at once? I do music/audio and can use the speed and two drives.

P.S. - I am amazed at the X220! The SD option means I could probably have oodles of storage o this thing!

I haven't done it myself, but I see no reason to prevent it. Once the mSATA SSD is installed, it's seen as another hard drive by Windows.

Thanks! Any idea which mSATA SSD is best to install? Everyone is talking about Intel, but then I see a bunch of 128GB - 240GB SSDs on eBay.

If you already have the non msata ssd, then I think you're all set. I had a spare sata ssd that I tried putting in before I realized that it only takes a thinner 1.8 drive.

No. I actually ALSO want the mSATA SSD in ADDITION to the SATA SSD.

This way I can have TWO SSD Drives for my audio projects.

I'm running exactly such a config

Samsung 830 as my main SSD with Windows 7, and then an OCZ Nocti mSATA SSD with Ubuntu. Everything runs fine, I'm considering erasing the Ubuntu on the mSATA SSD and try out Windows 8 Release Preview on it... but don't have the time to do it yet.

There are not many mSATA SSD choices out there yet, and they are relatively expensive. But given how every laptop manufacturers are making ultrabooks now, mSATA SSD will become a lot more popular and I'd expect a huge growth in mSATA SSD choice in the 2nd half of this year.

The Intel 310 series mSATA SSD seems popular as an option as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820167040
