500gb drive for x220

#1 Post by richarddd » Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:23 pm

I have an mSATA SSD for the OS and programs and a Hitachi 320gb 7200rpm HDD for data, music and video on my x220. I'd like to replace the HDD with a 500gb and am looking for advice on which one to get.

My priorities are quiet operation and reliability. Speed doesn't really matter.

Newegg lists four 7mm 500gb notebook drives, 2 Hitachis, a Seagate and a WD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productco ... 236-240-TS

Which would be best for me?

As far as brand, that is just personal preference. The Hitachi 7k500 is a 7200RPM drive like yours. The others are 5400RPM (slower)

The 5400 Hitachi seems a bit quieter than the 7200, according to the specs and Hitachi's descriptions. Speed isn't an issue for me. The WD is also described as quiet.

It's a toss up for any of the 3 5400 RPM drives then. It's really luck of the draw as I don't see a specific reason to pick one of those brands over the other and the prices are the same...
