x200 + Samsung 830 SSD = not compatible?
x200 + Samsung 830 SSD = not compatible?
Hello,
my brand-new Samsung 830 SSD arrived today and I put it straight into my X200 (7459-AM5).
Issue:
Installation of Windows 7 will proceed to some point or another, but eventually I will always see the "disc idleness LED" (dont know the proper name for that) to stay on continually for some time, installations halts and nothing happens anymore.
If I let the laptop sit like that for some time, I will eventually get ERROR 2100 (1).
What's most likely the problem here? Is the SSD faulty? Or is the X200 faulty/having compatibility issues?
What may be of importance: I had a Crucial M4 before the Samsung. I sent the Crucial back because of occasional hang-ups, where the idleness LED would also stay on for some 30s or so after which everything returned to work properly...
Cheers,
Martin

Have you updated to current bios -- is bios SATA setting AHCI (changed from Compatibility) ?

I second the suggestion to check for a BIOS update. I'm currently running a 256GB Samsung 830 in my X200. Been great so far.

Is there another PC you can try it in to test whether it's working?

Alternatively pop it into an external HDD caddy and see if the drive works.

Did this now and gets the same freezes on an X60s. Guess it's RMA then?ZaZ wrote:Is there another PC you can try it in to test whether it's working?
Besides that I noticed that the 830 was dead quiet in the X60s, while when working in the X200, there was a constant "whistling" and "squealing". Had the same with my Crucial m4. Any remarks on that?

I've had the pleasure of working with over 10 SSDs. There's no moving parts. Like memory they should be dead quiet.

Have you tried recreating the DVD or thumb drive you're doing your install from? If that's corrupted it'll just keep giving errors.
You shouldn't get any noise from an SSD like you describe unless it's damaged or the machines damaged.
