Help with a X200
Help with a X200
Hey there,
I've owned a ThinkPad in the past and I loved it, but obviously technology moved on and it began to slow down and look a bit sad in comparison to other Laptops around.
After 5 or so years from not owning a laptop (well owned one, but not really used it) I've gone out and bought a ThinkPad X200 from eBay for around £170.
As you guys are probably aware, ThinkPad's are known for their excellent build quality and high-end hardware.
However - I don't actually know which one I've actually bought. I thought that there was one set of the X200, but there turns out that there have been quite a few of them - all completely different hardware wise.
The only thing I'm aware of is that it's 'Type' ID is 7450-AK4.
I was wondering whether people who know these models of the X200 can answer a few questions for me.
What is the max capacity when it comes to RAM?
What kind of RAM is it? I've read that some models have DDR2 and some have DDR3.
Can I install a SSD and expect it to work out of the box, or will I have to do a bit of fiddling via the BIOS?
Thanks

Re: Help with a X200
first, please update your location to show your town in wales..
i see you are using some sort of library access near manchester..
so i'm not sure if you will get the email when i reply..
also, welcome to the forum..
OK, just go to support.lenovo.com and follow the menus to warranty support..
somewhere there you will find a place to enter your serial number and that will show exactly what X200 you have..
170 pounds seems like a pretty decent price for an X200..

Re: Help with a X200
Thanks for the speedy response.
I can't really show my town in Wales as there's not many of us live here and I prefer to be anonymous.
I live no where near Manchester, my exchange is in my local town.
EDIT:- I read that the max memory is 4GB, however I also read that you can get it up to 8GB with a bit of 'tinkering'.
Wondering whether anyone has done this?

I'm certain that you could show a larger area (in England it would be a "shire" of some kind, or similar - don't know how it goes where you are) along with Wales, UK.Number_25 wrote:Thanks for the speedy response.

No tinkering involved. All *00 series units will take 8GB RAM.EDIT:- I read that the max memory is 4GB, however I also read that you can get it up to 8GB with a bit of 'tinkering'.

Thanks.
It should be here by Friday, looking forward to it. Not had a usable laptop for ages.
Edit: Added my villages name, you all seem like good people - no need to worry I guess.

Re: Help with a X200
Yes, a SSD will work with no BIOS update. Having had the X200 and a SSD you might want to look at the Seagate Momentus XT. It's a hard drive with a flash drive attached, which will offer you much more space. Once it figures your usage patterns, it'll offer SSD like performance for boot times and commonly opened applications. Having just a SSD will limit how much stuff you can carry, which I personally disliked when I had the X200 and SSD.

The laptop is mainly for University work when I'm not at campus, so storage isn't really an issue as I'm not going to store a lot of films or music on it.ZaZ wrote:Yes, a SSD will work with no BIOS update. Re: Help with a X200
It came today, and I've played around with it a bit and no problems really - runs Windows 8 a charm.
However, I'm finding it awkward to get back to the 'nipple' instead of using a mouse. But I'm patent and willing to keep using it.
What RAM would you guys advise me to get? I would preferably want 8gigs as it'll give me a lot of room to maneuver.
I've also found a 9-cell battery online, but I'm not sure whether it's a 'proper' 9 cell because the price seems too good to be true.

Is it good, or should I avoid?

Re: Help with a X200
HI,
I'm happy owner of X200.
I can confirm that it has 8GB RAM DDR3.
This small, powerful, beautiful machine is really solid also.
Definetely good choice.
