X201 black screen

#1 Post by Ma7erz » Wed Sep 12, 2012 1:03 am

Hello everyone,

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 with a problem which I wasn't able to fix.
The LCD screen was broken and I had to replace it.
The original one was Samsung LTN121AT07, but I got LG LP121WX3 and told it's identical.
When I installed it I thought it wasn't working. But it was working but I could hardly see anything (black screen).
I thought the problem was with the LCD cable, and I bought a new one but with the same problem.

I've tested the screen on another working X200 laptop and it worked. So I don't know what the problem is!
I'm lost!

I'm using the laptop on an external monitor now and it's working perfect.
What the problem could be, any advice please?

With machines that have an LED backlight (like yours), a broken screens will often cause a blown fuse on the motherboard. Older machines with a CCFL backlight would not have that kind of problem. Broken screens would cause an open circuit, rather than a short. Lenovo doesn't replace fuses. They say you need a new motherboard. It sounds likely that is your problem. Unless you have a repair shop with very good soldering equipment (at least a quartz preheater and a good rework station) that does that sort of repair, you are looking at a board replacement. Unfortunately, San Francisco is a long way from your location

Thank you for your reply.
A friend of mine has a shop and he does this sort of things. But would you please guide me where I can find that fuse?

Man, I really don't know how to thank you!!
As you said, it's the fuse :)
After all the trouble with this laptop for months, it's now running perfectly.

My friend was able to locate the blown fuse and change it.
Thank you very much.

Hi -- sounds like I've got a similar problem.
The screen on my x201 is dead black, but the status indicator lights and keyboard-illuminator thinklight work fine. The VGA-out port also works fine, so for the moment I've got it hooked up to an external monitor.

Based on these other posts, it sounds like I might actually have a motherboard problem. This little laptop's taken quite a beating (lots of outdoor fieldwork), and the sound output (both internal speakers and line-out) has been a bit wonky lately too, which makes me suspect the motherboard.

Is it worth trying to replace the screen, or should I just retire the machine into service as an ultra-compact desktop unit?

Your image is down :( I think I have the same problem, how do I even get to the motherboard? Sadly there doesn't seem to be a teardown on iFixit :(

Click on the HMM link at the top of this page, and download the illustrated manual for your X201.
