X210 SSD Ultrabase question

Sorry if this is an overdone subject but I would like a little confirmation. I have an X201 with Ultrabase which came with a CD drive which I never use.

What I would like to do is:

Get an SSD to replace the 500 GB drive in the PC. I would like a little extra battery life.
Put the old Drive in the Ultrabase to use for backups and storage.

Is is really that easy? I only need to get the adapter for the drive to put in the ultrabase and buy a 9mm SSD? Is this correct?
Will I have to re-install or can I just copy the drive. Will the Q drive on the current HDD work from the Ultrabase work if I later want to restore back the factory settings?

Yes you can do the it. You'll just need the modular caddy for the drive.

The X201 uses a 9.5mm drive. The thing you have to be concerned about when copying/cloning the drive is whether the partition is aligned properly. If it's not, performance will degrade. If you do a clean install with Vista or Windows 7, the partition will be aligned correctly, but XP won't do it. I don't know if cloning or copying will work. My guess would be the recovery discs will do it, but I could be wrong. I was lead to believe cloning will not work, but that was some time ago. Perhaps newer software can do it. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can post.
