Nasty stripes on X220 screen - for no apparent reason
Nasty stripes on X220 screen - for no apparent reason
Here is a short video showing the problem: http://youtu.be/CX9pWifMHUQ
I've been using my X220 for about six months, never dropped it. Everything was just perfect until yesterday.
The horizontal stripes appeared as of out of nowhere.
I tried to reboot into Windows, just to see if it might have been down to faulty video drivers under Ubuntu, but the problem appears to be mechanical or electrical. I think it might have something to do with a faulty/worn-out cable between the MB and the screen. The reason I think so is that if I tilt the screen to a certain angle, I 'kind of' can make the stripes to 'almost' disappear or at least not look so gross. But obviously this is not a permanent solution, and unacceptable from the usage point of view.
I cannot take this laptop to repair under warranty, as I purchased it on eBay and I am not residing in the US.
I can take it to a local repair shop but I really need to understand what the problem is--maybe I will be able to rectify it myself.
In that regard, an opinion or advice from those with knowledge would be sincerely appreciated.

Did you check if it's IWS-elligible? It might be, and since Lenovo associates warranties with machines, not people you'd be all set if it's elligible.ai69 wrote: I cannot take this laptop to repair under warranty, as I purchased it on eBay and I am not residing in the US.

Maybe, the LCD cable FRU can be found here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-77192 but repair under warranty by Lenovo authorized service provider should be preferred solution.ai69 wrote:I think it might have something to do with a faulty/worn-out cable between the MB and the screen. Thank you Puppy. May I ask, are you sure this is caused by the LCD cable? I am not based in the US so it will be a dramatic mistake if I order a replacement cable now whereas if fact this problem might have been caused by something else.

No. It is one of possible causes. That's why warranty exists. BTW I'd never buy such expensive device as notebook without proper warranty.ai69 wrote:May I ask, are you sure this is caused by the LCD cable?

That certainly looks like a bad panel, not the cable.
Re: Nasty stripes on X220 screen - for no apparent reason
I've had the very same problem on my X220. Support technicians at first thought it is the cable, but it actually turned to be a defective panel problem. I believe it is the known problem of the first generation of LG IPS panels. The replacement panel is also significantly brighter.
