Nasty stripes on X220 screen - for no apparent reason

Here is a short video showing the problem: http://youtu.be/CX9pWifMHUQ
I've been using my X220 for about six months, never dropped it. Everything was just perfect until yesterday.
The horizontal stripes appeared as of out of nowhere.
I tried to reboot into Windows, just to see if it might have been down to faulty video drivers under Ubuntu, but the problem appears to be mechanical or electrical. I think it might have something to do with a faulty/worn-out cable between the MB and the screen. The reason I think so is that if I tilt the screen to a certain angle, I 'kind of' can make the stripes to 'almost' disappear or at least not look so gross. But obviously this is not a permanent solution, and unacceptable from the usage point of view.
I cannot take this laptop to repair under warranty, as I purchased it on eBay and I am not residing in the US.
I can take it to a local repair shop but I really need to understand what the problem is--maybe I will be able to rectify it myself.
In that regard, an opinion or advice from those with knowledge would be sincerely appreciated.
