Working away on my X301 here tonight, when I thought I saw a wisp of smoke coming out by the right hand hinge. It's late, I'm imagining things ... hell no that is smoke. Pull out the charger cable, flip it over and remove the battery.

Put my hand on the keyboard bezel by the right hinge, cripes it's hot.

5 minutes later, after pulling the keyboard, front keyboard bezel and top deck off, I get to the DC connector. Removing the metal shield I can see the problem. The DC connector has shorted on the metal shield :( :(

So now can anyone help me with what my have caused it, and more importantly where I can get a replacement from ?

Interestingly from the HMM the DC-in cable is FRU 44C4045
But the part is marked 93P4580
A google search on the latter part ref returns DC In cables for SL400 and SL500 machines. Does this mean anything ?

Cheers

D

FRU #44C4045 is the correct and current number. Here is the item on eBay, shipping to New Zealand:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-POWER-JACK-C ... 2a212cb75c

and more:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=X30 ... &_osacat=0

Good luck!

Thanks for that, searching eBay by FRU only turned up one in the UK. I've ordered one and will install it when it arrives.

My guess is that at some stage an incorrect part has been fitted (the machine is not new to me). The FRU of the damaged part shows as a DC socket for SL400/SL500 models, and photos on the web show an additional tail with an earth lug. That lug and tail is not present on the part I removed, meaning it was probably snipped off to fit it into my X301, thus maybe damaging the connector.

Caveat Emptor

So the new DC Connector has arrived. The Invoice says 44C405 (as per the HMM) but the actual part is marked 93P4580 just like the piece I removed. However, there is no sign that any part has been removed from it.

So, I'll reassemble the laptop after work today and see how things go ...

So, reassembled it last night, and it now works flawlessly again. I'm figuring that the DC connector must have shorted outr internally and was dumping 20V onto the chassis, which then returned via the negative wire.
