How to tell if X220 has IPS screen, in general?

I live in Russia and I'm afraid tabook doesn't quite cut it with local models. E.g. 4-digit prefixes are the same, but 3-character suffixes of the models can't be found in tabook.
Example: 4290-LE8

In general,
The X220 I have is a 4286-CTO model ordered with IPS, however, IPS is not displayed on any document. The display is brilliant with full angle viewing.

You should be able to check the configuration on the lenovo support site by entering your model/config number as long as the suffix isn't CTO into the box there. For example, the one provided in the OP seems to be an i3, 4GB from the factory and non IPS.

Lenovo's model information on the website is reliable and full about most things, but not about IPS. They never mention whether the screen is IPS or not.

Latios, what is the address of the support site where you managed to get this information?
dr_st, how did you get IPS Screen on your X32?

It's a custom build using a 12" IPS screen that was available for Tablets such as X41T, X60T, X61T (minus the digitizer). I didn't do the mod - the seller who sold it to me did. A few people on the forum have done similar mods.

Just get to see one in person, It should be obvious by just looking at it. I wonder where is the point about paying premium for something you can't really tell the difference...

Yes, but the question is about how to tell
before buying particular model. Lenovo does not help there since there is no longer way to check it (as it was in old IBM times). Most of eshops (at least over here) have misleading information about display technology used in particular configuration.
We have preconfigured models over here only. For example the most expensive X220 i7 configuration with (overpriced) Lenovo SSD had ... yes, TN panel (and it was the only i7 configuration available). The second to the most expensive configuration with i5 and HDD had IPS panel.

And all of this is based on whatever the (probably incompetent) reseller tells you, because there's no other way to tell, right?
So, are there any tips on how to distinguish between IPS and non-IPS panels?

IPS displays look much better, with better colour and contrast and the viewing angles are much wider, but if you have nothing to compare it to, as easy test is to prod it with your finger. An IPS screen does not have its picture distort when you prod it like a TN screen does.
EDIT: Oh, I misread the question.
My ThinkPad X220 has the IPS FlexView screen, but it actually does not show up as such on the Lenovo site. It does not say Premium HD screen in the specs. My model is the 4291UL5.

Thanks, I'll try it in stores. This is useful to know.

I don't get it. Isn't this as simple as pushing the screen back and looking if the colors start to invert? Viewing angles is the most obvious difference between IPS and TN.

Yes, it really is that simple. But it takes just a little bit of experience.

Use something like AIDA64 (previously Lavalys Everest) to read the screen model number. The IPS panel on my X220 Tablet is the LG LP125WH2-SLB1, and I believe its shared with the normal X220 and the new X230 lineup.
