What causes washed-out screen after display turns off & on?

When I leave my X220 running idle for a short period like 10-15 minutes and the timer kicks in and turns off display, upon moving cursor I am greeted with a gradually graying and extremely weird gamma corrupted display. In the past I would actually put it to sleep or hibernate and then reboot to get it back to normal, then I realized a trick, I just hit projector/external display button and cycle through Duplicate and then back to Display only, this fixes it.

Any ideas? Is this common. When this happened first time I thought display was damaged.

Turn off the 'Intel Power Saving Technology.'

Right click on desktop>>graphics properties>>Power Features>>Graphics Power Plan Settings (click to show 'On battery')>> uncheck the 'Intel Power Saving Technology' box

Hopefully that helps! Good luck :)

Thanks, I had "Display Power Saving Technology" enabled. I disabled that.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Supposedly it is a power saving feature but its side-effects consist of PITA and more PITA :D

Not sure why it is enabled as a default setting :??:
