X200 AFFS mod questions

#1 Post by Morten » Fri Nov 23, 2012 11:48 am

Hi,

I've picked up a X200 with a defective screen and want to do the AFFS mod on it. I know there is lots of really good info flying around on how to do the mod, but I am hoping someone will take the time to help me with two particular questions:

- I read somewhere that there are now both genuine BoeHydis and "knock-offs" in the market. How do I tell them apart???

- Is it easy to remove the touch-screen layer or should I pay to get one without the touch-screen layer?

For what it's worth, I'm thinking of getting the glossy type - HV121W4-110 I believe. These are the auctions I'm looking at:

- Glossy With touchscreen, $56 shipped to us addr:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/BOEHYDIS-HV121WX ... 3f1b6aed28

- Glossy Without Touch Screen, $144 shipped worldwide
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Boehydis-AFFS-LC ... 19bd10b4f5

The one with the touchscreen is less than half the cost, an $88 savings.. Too good to be true / too difficult to deal with?

I guess the matt screen is still an option although I am leaning towards the glossy version as I hear it's a bit sharper and more saturated (and since I typically wouldn't have any reflections to deal with where I use it).

- Matt without touchscreen, $164 shipped worldwide
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-BOE-AFFS-LCD ... 19ca17ea13

Thanks for any advice!

A razor blade between the LCD and glass surface will do the trick. I wouldn't describe it as rocket science, more of a muscle job. Just be careful not break the glass or damage the screen.

I bought the 110 from Skyline. I had no reason believe it was not new or a knock-off. It looked great, but the gloss could get a bit annoying at the right angle. I think for $88, I'd cut the glass off, but that's me.

Thank You ZaZ. I've ordered the glossy with touchscreen from Skyline27. Searching the forum, I see older references to this seller (Skyline), so he's been selling these for years and have good ratings. Will update this after I get it.

I also went for the screen with touchscreen because it was cheaper. Just use a sharp cutter and have some patience and you'll get it done

I bought the glossy one without the touch surface from thinkpad_2007 a year ago - I can recommend this seller too.

Good luck with the mod and enjoy the brilliant screen! :)

I also have a the same question about the affs mod. I saw this listing on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FREE-S-H-VIEWIZ ... 5d2402954d

I realize the brand is different(viewiz). The seller said that this is the same as the boehydis panel. He also mention that it is not possible to remove the LCD from the touchpanel. Is this true? Is this basically the same as the one posted on OP but just USED? Would you recommend buying this over the one skyline is selling for 25 less?

Thank you for all the help in advance!

Look here. Viewiz is the model name, not a separate brand.
http://www.hydis.com/eng/07_mis/mis_01.asp

Label is much the same as the one I purchased except the top-left logo simply says 'BOE' rather than 'BOEHYDIS'.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/271042932008?ssP ... 1439.l2649
Both labels carry TUV logo and have otherwise similar design. Looks to me it could be the same thing.

The reason I didn't go for one of these is the fact it's used. Not because of any scratches there may be (you'll be removing those with the touchscreen), but because the CCFL backlight may have a number of hours on it already and may have dimmed somewhat. Just seemed to make sense to pay $31 more and get one with a new bulb (and that with certainty won't have even the slightest pressuremark or other unpleasant surprise).

I haven't been down south of the border yet to pick mine up - will update here when I get the mod done.

It's the Hydis.

neozengar wrote:He also mention that it is not possible to remove the LCD from the touchpanel. Is this true?
Not true. As I mentioned before you can take a razor blade to cut the glue between the touch surface and the LCD frame.

I would think the panel underneath the glass is in quite good condition without seeing it of course, but the screen is used and since the screens are CFFL backlit, it may have dimmed some. I guess if it were me, I'd get a new one.

Thank you guys so much for the advice. What my intial worries were that those panels were the "knock-off" models mentioned by OP. I will definitely think about getting a new one over the used one. Thank you!
