Slow start up with continuous Hard Disk activity

When I boot my X220i or re-start it from sleep or hibernate mode, it takes me at least 10 minutes to take control of the computer and start typing. During this time I can see the hard disk light flashing continuously. I have had the laptop for 1.5 years and this problem only started a few months back.
I tried de-fragmenting the hard drive, and I looked at the startup files but I could not get anywhere. I am using Norton Internet Security, could this be the problem?
Any one faced such a problem?

Perhaps. You could try disabling Norton to see if that speeds things up. Have you tried running a hard drive diagnostic?

It's a long shot, but are you sure that all the RAM is showing up? One of the sticks could be loose.

Can you try "Sleep" and see what happens when you resume from it?
Also is there a particular reason you use 'Hibernate' versus 'Sleep?'
IIRC 'Hibernate' requires a huge PAGE file on your hard drive. Sleep stores things in your RAM while your laptop is in a low-power state. The result is instant resume when you resume power to your laptop. You might have already knew this but just thought I would throw that info into this post anyway. Hope you find a solution soon! Good luck
