X201 Base housing falling apart...

#1 Post by DaKKS » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:40 am

I bought my X201 with a piece of plastic missing from the modem port:

First I though it was something the previous user damaged. But I've been treating this thing like bloody royalty, and its doing the same thing on the other side:

There is now a hairline crack.

This happened right where the palm rest means the keyboard frame. At first I believed the express card was causing it, but it doesn't touch the base housing at all. And it would not cause the same issue on the other side of the computer. Its almost like the palmrest is slightly off, which would also explain the hairline crack near the edge that developed right after i got it back from warranty repair. Lenovo does nothing because they claim its because of poor handling of the computer. Which puts me at fault regardless of the fact that the computer is still under warranty, and will be for over a year.

Note that I have not opened up the computer beyond a hard drive and ram upgrade.

Couple of points:

1) You never disassembled/reassembled the casing/
2) You never dropped it.
3) This happened after warranty repair as the service center misaligned it.
4) Hopefully you took pictures with time stamp before shipping it in. If you met the above 3 factors, and you have photos you have a valid case.
Don't let them shift a shoddy repair burden onto you as replacing the case is not cheap. You don't seem like you can do it yourself and you would have to source the case at a high price.
I would aggressively pursue this with them rather than letting them ram rod you.

1: Nope, I'm still under warranty. Only swapped harddrive and ram.
2: Nope, I have not.
3: Yes, at first I didn't notice but now that its cracked, its pretty hard to miss.
4: Unfortunately, I did not.

the magnesium base on your ThinkPad X201 must have been bent to have these issues around the ports.

Well, I went through Lenovo UK, and their techs looked the pictures I sent them. Case is now being (re)reviewed by Lenovo Sweden.
