Is the 9 volt 44++ battery the longest running battery to get for the X220?

There is the "slice" battery that can be used in combination with the 9-cell to obtain the longest possibly runtime, but otherwise yes, the 9-cell is the largest Lenovo makes.

Does anybody know is the same 9-cell FRU is used on the X220 and X230? (I expect these to be the same, but I want to make sure)

What about the earlier X200 and X201? (I expect these to be different)

Ivy Bridge ThinkPad batteries, this would include the T, W and X series, and I would assume later are chipped, and will not work with older ThinkPads.

The X200 and X201 batteries are interchangeable outside of the tablets.

My 9cell is doing surprisingly well. I can still get 10 hours with wireless on. I have < 20 cycles in 1 year usage, however. X230 is supposed to do even better, but it's the crappy keyboard so I won't go there :).
