X201 Dock & HDD adapter

Does anyone know why an SSD in a disk drive adapter in the dock will not be recognized by the tablet, but if I put a regular HDD in the adapter, it shows up immediately? Also, I assume it is not possible to boot to an OS from that same adapter? Thanks for the help.
