Boehydis disappointment!

#1 Post by barneypooch » Fri Mar 15, 2013 7:10 am

Hi all - first post!

I got hold of a barebones x200s, popped in a 256gb ssd and am very happy. The screen, however, was an absolute dog, so i splashed out on the highly recommended Boehydis (matte screen) from the equally highly recommended lenovo_2007.

Anyway, it arrived very quickly, I put it and.... meh. The colours are great, as are the viewing angles. But it's still so dim. I don't mean unreadable, but even on full brightness, it's just about comfortable in a daylit room.
I've read my eyes sore the past two days, looking for answers, but without any definitive conclusion.

- could the inverter be the problem? Do aging inverters behave this way?
- could it be a driver problem? I've read of people changing from Windows 8 back to 7 and suddenly finding their screen is only half as bright;
- could it be something on the mainboard, like old capacitors?

Finally, could it be that these screens are just a bit on the dim side, in comparison with modern ones? The screen on my Nexus 7, for instance, seems about twice as bright.

Thanks for reading, and for any advice.

That's cause it is. I believe the Nexus is rated at 400 nits while the Hydis is 200 nits. Screens these days are brighter than they used to be, though I find my 200 nit R60e to be plenty bright. Is the screen new? If it's used, it could have dimmed some because it's CFFL backlit. Perhaps try comparing other screens that have a similar brightness to see if it's off.

Thanks for the reply. I fear you're right!

The screen is brand new. I guess I was hoping for a bit more brightness for so much money.

Do you think there's any chance a new inverter could make it brighter?

Thank you. Honesty's hard to come by these days.

It's a great screen for watching movies, though, and for that I'm grateful.
