The x201 is still a very capable laptop but a gaming rig it is not. It was never designed for this and cannot be upgraded. Wrong tool for the job.
For any sort of gaming at all you need a machine with a decent video card. How decent and how powerful that is will depend on the type of game and your budget.

The Intel HD Graphics in the X201 should be able to decode videos by itself (via DXVA2), and even without DXVA2 the Core i5 should be fast enough for this.
What program are you using to watch videos? And what OS are you running?
As for gaming, there's not much you can do, unless you get a vidock or similar eGPU solutions.

Yes, I was able to watch 1080 video on my older X200 and X200t without any problems.

Installing a second RAM module to unlock dual-channel should increase graphics performance by nearly 50%.

If you don't need "gaming on the go", but do it home at your desk you can get a "PE4L"/"PE4H" solution with a desktop graphicscard.
But not the most practical one
