Ram upgrade: what frequency ?

#1 Post by rzl » Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:19 pm

Hi!

I own a ThinkPad x220 which now has a single 4gb ram stick, which is pc3-10600.

I would like to add a 8gb stick and reach 12gb of ram.

Can I buy a pc3-12800 stick and use it anyway, so that when I'll have money for another ram stick i'll just replace the pc3-10600 one ?

The faster one should just work slower than it could, there should be no problems, right ?

Thanks in advance!

You can get the PC3-12800, and there is no reason to ever replace the PC3-10600. (a) the laptop is limited to PC3-10600 anyways, and (b) there is no noticeable benefit to running with faster RAM. Of course if you at some point need need 16GB RAM, there will also be no downside to getting another PC3-12800. It will work just fine, but at PC3-10600 speeds.
