X220 boot failure if USB thumbdrive is inserted

X220 will not boot if I have a USB Drive installed.
I installed it as the backup destination for the Win7 Pro backup app.
I tried it in the X220 & in the dock, both bad.
I tried it after formatting so it would be blank, no good.

When it is installed, I cannot even get into the BIOS. It just hangs on a blank screen until I pull it, then the BIOS appears.

In the BIOS, I have the HDD as the first item.

I haven't used a permanently installed USB device in the X220 before, so I don't know when this issue started.

I have repurposed this unit, so I just completed a recovery & all (mostly) MS & Lenovo updates.

Thanks for any help folks!

At least for the x230 there is a bios that correct that problem

I had the same problem when my Garmin Edge was plugged in before booting up. My solution was of course to just boot first, then plug in the Garmin.

I'd be interested to know what the solution was though.

"- (Fix) Fixed an issue where hang might happen at post with a certain USB HDD."
This was on bios 1.37 for X220, if you get the latest one 1.39 it would contain that fix.
