Thinkpad X220 Type 4287

#1 Post by dan49829 » Sun Oct 20, 2013 9:32 am

My SD card reader has not ever worked consistently, but I rarely ever used it. This week I needed to copy some files on an SD card and it will not work at all. Previously, I had been able to reinsert it a few times, but now - nothing. When I go into "Computer" the drive is not visible.

Posts on Lenovo's site advised uninstalling or deleting the driver, downloading and reinstalling it, but after several tries, I get the same message:

"Device Driver Software was not successfully installed."

"Ricoh PCLe SDXC/MMC Host Controller Device Unplugged"

This may be a separate issue, but there was a suggestion on one of the sites that my BIOS needed to be updated, so I downloaded from Lenovo to a CD and tried to boot from it, but when it boots on the CD, and I try to update, I get the following message:

"BIOS Directory was not found, The process did not complete."

I am not a sophisticated user, and not sure if I did something to screw this up or ???, but it doesn't seem like a user should have to go through all of this just to use a card reader on their computer.

My card reader doesn't work either. It used to blue screen every time I put a card in it, but now does nothing when a card is inserted. I should have had it replaced when it was under warranty, but since I don't use it much, I never got around to it. Since the card reader is attached to the motherboard, the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard. If it's under warranty, Lenovo will do it for free. If not, it'll be expensive to fix. As a more practical solution, you might want to pick up a USB card reader, which I did for less than $5 on eBay.

If your SD card reader sometimes works then I doubt it's a BIOS problem. Either a problem with the card reader, or could be it's loosely connected inside the machine, so works or doesn't if the machine is moved. Easiest solution for you now is to get a USB card reader.

In terms of the BIOS update, since the X220 doesn't have a CD drive, how did you boot from the BIOS image?

Probably an external drive I would guess. I've done it. I would agree it's unlikely to be a BIOS issue.
