?is X220 enough better than X201?

Looking to move up from X201 to something better for teenage grandson [seems like the X220's are now coming off lease]. Is there enough difference in capabilities [speed, memory capacity, LCD] or are the two units so similar as to not be worth the extra investment?

Two things that would make me consider X220 over X201:

a) IPS screen option

b) 16GB RAM cap as opposed to 8 on X201

I'd also venture a guess that X220 offers better battery life, but I've never ran them side-by-side, so take this with a grain of salt.

Another advantage is that an X220 would take a mSata SSD, so your grandson could use two drives on that Thinkpad (E.g. mSata SSD for the OS and 2.5" SSD/Hard Drive for storage)

1. X220 runs slightly cooler than the X201.
2. IPS is available on the X220 (not sure whether your version has it).
3. Better keyboard on the X220
4. SATAIII on the X220 vs SATAII on the X230
5. Maximum of 3 hdd (including the mSATA) when using the Ultrabase Series 3 with X220, as opposed to 2 hdd on the X201 with the Ultrabase X200.
6. X220 has the Displayport on the machine itself, whilst the X201 does not. So you can connect the X220 to an external LCD using digital video connection without having a ultrabase.
7. X220 is available with a 6 cells slice battery, which when used with the 9 cells internal gives about 13 hrs of battery life on average. It lasts you all day.
8. If your X220 has an i7 CPU, then it is available with a USB 3.0 port.

All that makes it worthwhile upgrading - thanks.

The one thing that may be sometimes a downside of X220 compared to X201 is screen resolution.

X201 can come in 1280x800 or (rare) 1440x900 flavors.

X220 is only 1366x768, IPS or not.

I'd take the nicer IPS HD screen over the WXGA if that's the case here. I think the X220 is a better machine in most regards - stronger CPU, longer battery life, factory IPS, SSD+HDD, etc. The question is do you want to spend the money?

If I'm going to upgrade my grandson's X201, isn't the x220 about the next rung up on the ladder, without going to the newest?
