X220 Turbo Boost button disappeared - on Basic Mode

#1 Post by karazi » Thu May 01, 2014 10:40 pm

In the Power Manager utility, I have always toggled Turbo Boost on and off with the Turbo Boost button that turns yellow when toggled on, underneath the CPU and GPU gauges. Now, underneath the gauges, it says "Intel Turbo Boost Technology Enabled," but I can tell from cpuz that the processor is throttled at 797mhz, and doesn't go anywhere near the 2.7ghz (i7) as it usually did before this happened. This is on Basic Mode, not Advanced, where the turbo boost option does not even exist. I've tried reinstalling the power manager with no success. Any help would be appreciated, it is just too slow!

It should only go Turbo Boost when you actually load the CPU.

Never seen an option for it on my W520.

In advanced mode, Turbo Boost can be accessed from the System Performance drop down menu under System Settings for each power plan.

Looking at CPU-Z, my i7 X220 runs at around 797MHz when idling.

However, I would use the Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor, however, to monitor Turbo Boost performance, and run Linpack, wPrime or similar and that will give you a better indication of whether Turbo Boost is working on not.

Here is a link to what my power manager looks like.

Prior to this issue, I was able to start Turbo Boost whether on battery or not. Now with the activation button gone, I only see turbo-boost level processing power when I am plugged in. I am well aware that turbo boost only activates when CPU is being taxed, and looking at CPUZ while opening a program or large file has always spiked the processing speed as expected. Did they recently gimp the turbo-boost mode for X220? I am going to reformat if this problem persists, but unfortunately if Lenovo made a change in the software then unfortunately and obviously that would not help me at all. Any advice much appreciated, it is necessary for me to have the ability to enable and disable turbo boost on battery and plugged in. Really hope this is fixable.

Edit (sort of fixed):

I was able to get the button back:

I reset my windows, lenovo, and bios power settings to default, and set all bios settings to max performance. Not sure what the exact solution was but if I happen to figure out what exact setting enabled/disabled the button then I will post, otherwise would be interested to know if someone else does. Just glad that it did not disappear forever, and that now I don't to bother attempting to reformat.

Now it's fast again :)

Thanks!
